Hey guys im getting really excited about my 5 week trip to Barcelona.. but my only question is cell phone usage. Currently I have the Iphone with ATT. I called ATT and they apprised me of the expensive plans they have. Is it better for me to get a new phone once i get there with a local plan or get a new Spanish sim card once I get there? I would really love to use my Iphone along with my Apps, such as grindr. If anyone has ever been to Spain please let me know what you did regarding your mode of telecommunications. Thanks guys!

Very good question. I'm wondering the same thing regarding phone plans since I'm going to Barcelona in a few months. I just switched over to Sprint a few months ago.

Hey there, I was just in Bcn for the past 5 months here are a few options:

    1) Get your phone unlocked and use a spanish sim card. (I'm not sure how to do this but I know some people that did this with their iphones.)
    2) Buy a pay as you go phone. they cost about 20 euro base price, they might load it with 19 euro of minutes when you buy it. they did it for me and my roommate, but not when my roommate had to buy a new phone bc he lost his. The companies you can use there are Orange, Vodafone, Movistar, among others. You can recharge it at any El Corte Ingles, a store of whichever provider you use or a the Tabbachi's.

Honestly, I liked having the pay as you go phone bc Bcn is notorious for being one of the worst pickpocketing cities. I could go out at night, be it to a sports bar to watch a football match with some friend or a crazy club, and I didn't have to worry about losing my more expensive american phone. The pay as you go plans work really well, you just want to make sure you don't run out of money on a sunday bc nothing is open.

Have fun!!! Barcelona is amazing! Hit me up if you want any advice of places to go!

EDIT: Calling charges in spain in general are not cheap, it is MUCH cheaper to text but calls can be kept short if you're efficient.

Also, are you planning on using this phone to call people in Spain, in Europe or in the US? I could never figure out how to call people that were outside of Spain on my pay as you go, calls to any other country I made with my US phone.

I was in Valencia, Spain in Oct. and took my Blackberry with me. I have Verizon and had to up-grade my package to International for the week I was there.

I think it cost me like 50 cent to send a text, 10 cent to get one. And, phone usage was 99 cent a minute. Plus, the upgrade to the international data package for the week.

I think over-all, it added about 20 to 30 bucks to my cell phone bill.

But, if you want to take your iPhone with you and use WiFi, try the Skype Apps. Use that to call people and stuff when you are in a WiFi Zone. Or, see how much it will cost to upgrade your data package for a week (some companies will let you pro-rate it for only the time you are there, they did for me).

Sign up for boingo wifi. Very cheap, $7.95/month for mobile access, which gives UNLIMITED wifi access.

My recommendation is to use your iPhone only via WiFi in Spain. International data roaming can be very expensive. You can unlock your iPhone, but unless you want to deal with jailbreaking, and compatibility issues, don't bother. Do that and the phone becomes a project. (Some guys love that, btw)

If you don't need phone contact 24/7, you might get by with something like Skype via WiFi. You would need to set up an account to make and receive calls, not just to other Skype users.

But if you need a regular phone:

For a regular phone suggest you buy an unlocked quad band GSM phone. Good selection from Amazon and many have US warranties. Make sure it's quad band so you can use it with all companies overseas. Then get a SIM card. You can get a Spanish one here, but probably can pick it up more cheaply over there.

If you have an unlocked iPhone Simyo and Yoigo are the companies that offer the cheapest Data-plans over here.

Simyo is probably the best option.

If your iphone is locked, i'd suggest you getting one of the cheap pay as you go phones if you need to make phone calles.

Many bars have free wi-fi in spain, so you will be able to check your mail and stuff, and probably Grindr too, but sometimes apps don't work very well in Wi-Fi hotsposts.

If you need any help let me know!

Just make sure before you go what your provider's rates are under all conditions

You don't wanna come back and be hit with a bill that won't be believed icon_eek.gif

You have to find a solution ASAP. Grindr is a very useful tool to hook up, so obviously you can't live without it. Make sure you get it on your phone while visiting, and have as much sex as you can with as many spaniards you can find. Happy Hooking!
