    Hey!

I'm going to study and live in Ankara for 5 months. I was wondering if any1 of you has been there and if you have any cool stories to tell about it. And how are they with the gay topic in Turkey? Is it OK or not as open as the western european countries?

Only seen Istanbul, think it is much more liberal than Ankara? Doesn't really help much. . .

Daelin said Is it OK or not as open as the western european countries?

Both? Had a good friend who did a study abroad in Amkara and he said that he handled it on a need-to-know basis; more toned down than, say, London, but no real issues as long as no PDA's, open heated political discussions. He said it was much less of an issue than he expected. "When in Rome. . .", always good advice.

Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country. Homosexuality is legal, but as far as I know, there aren't any protection laws for LGBT people there.

I'm sure likely anywhere else it has its gay life in various districts and neighborhoods. But I imagine Turkey is far from open compared to other European countries.
