Some people think the best ways for gays to defend themselves is with a gun. I personally find guns impractical for daily self defense. In my opinion martial arts and self defense training is not only more practical but is just a good skill set to have.

Ideally, I would just hit people with these

Personally I like this stun gun Idea because with these screws and steal in my neck I'd be in deep trouble if anyone grabs me in a neck hold or gets in a good punch that would throw my head back. Only thing is it looks awkward to carry around, I need distance between me and an opponent, maybe I should carry pepper spray or something.else that's small and would fit in a pants pocket.

Avoiding places where these measures are needed is the most ideal. Negotiating your safety should be your next step in the line of defense. Self defense classes are good because the practice can help you to instinctively defend yourself, (i.e. knowing how to reverse an elbow or a knee), but that should be a last option.

I'm lucky because I am a really big guy that most people want to avoid physical conflict with me AND that I would avoid physical conflict at the expense of ego and pride in the drop of a hat. I don't think that avoiding a dangerous situation makes you a coward, it makes you smart.

Expandable Batons are a nice choice. Length of a medium sized at, crushing power of a golf club, speed of a knife. Most likely though people will back off as soon as they see it (those things are terrifying)

LOL. The banner ad I get for this thread is for "Iron Man II Body Armor."

Edit: Even better, the page it clicks through to is for "used body armor."

There are places where possession and use of stun guns is illegal:

    http://www.bigbearacademy.com/stun-gun-laws.html

These tend to be the same places that ban firearms.

Guns - If you can't aim under pressure, you're better off without one.
Stun Gun - If it's not easily accessible in under a couple seconds, you better know how to run.
Self Defense - Best method for defending yourself against an unprovoked and unavoidable attack.
Avoiding Dangerous Locations - Gotta get gas/petrol, go to the bank, etc...those are high risk areas that can't be avoided.

In my opinion weapons are for cowards. The best way to defend yourself is to always be alert and avoid places that are dangerous icon_biggrin.gif

The most practical way to defend yourself is with words and when you encounter the few people who can't be swayed by them, well you just made a judgement error to be around them in the first place icon_razz.gif

how do you avoid places that are dangerous? any situation can become dangerous. like literally i cant think of one possible scenario where someone couldnt attempt to harm you. not that i live in constant paranoia but i mean what the fuck...home invasion, bar fight, robberies at a store..i mean there are alot of crazy fucks out there and they dont restrain their crazy cuz they are 'in a nice area'.

It is hard for most Australians to understand a gun mentality or the need for people to arm themselves with any form of weapon

The more people who carry weapons - the less safe is that community - it is nothing to do with individual liberty from our perspective - people have a greater right to be free to move safely and without threat

EXACTLY what I thought reading this thread. This obsession with being armed is frightening for a lot of people outside the US.

This, that and the people at greatest risk for being victimized often times can't even afford a gun. It's always people in wealthier neighborhoods that want to carry guns, like the cops aren't already there in 30 seconds lol.
