Is it true that the older you get the longer your rest period has to be to build muscles. i.e., men over 40 should target a muscle group once a week if he wants to build muscle in that area?

I hate to deal in absolutes, since I strongy believe that everyone is different and you need to find something that works for you.

Having said that, the idea that I should hit a particular muscle group only once a week if I want to build it up is absolutely not true for me. I had a nasty bout with food poisoning last summer - lost 10+ pounds of muscle mass - and when I was able to get back to the gym I hit my triceps 3 times a week to build them back up. It worked fine. Also had to rebuild my biceps after a shoulder injury a couple years ago - hitting them twice a week worked great.

Of course, it was all a lot easier 25 years ago...

Recovery time is important at all ages. I hit parts twice a week. Seems to do the trick.

A LOT HAS TO DO WITH YOUR BODY TYPE. ECTOMORPHIC TYPES DON'T RESPOND THE SAME AS ENDOMORPHS. ALSO, DON'T GET STUCK INTO DOING THE SAME ROUTINE FOR TOO LONG--GOTTA SHOCK THE MUSCLES EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE WITH A CHANGE OF ROUTINE OR TYPES OF EXERCISES

SURE IT COSTS BUCKS BUT GET A TRAINER--PREFERABLY SOMEONE WHO HAS YOUR SAME APPROX BODY TYPE OR AT LEAST KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THERE ARE TOO MANY UNDER-EXPERIENCED OR YOUNG TRAINERS OUT THERE AT THE "CHAINSTORE" GYMS LIKE BALLY'S OR LA FITNESS--DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY--INVEST IN A GOOD ONE AND REAP THE BENEFITS

I strongly agree with BigAllOver. Get a personal trainer if you can, but make sure the trainer is a good one.

My understanding is that you should take 48 hours rest before working out the same muscle group again (for the bigger muscle groups). My trainer told me that if you really want to grow, you should work out the same (bigger) muscle group within 72 hours. Smaller muscle groups (arms, abs) require much less rest. I've never read anything to indicate that age is a factor.

Of course, as was posted already, you should really just try different things and figure out what works best for you. Everyone is different, and everyone's body responds differently.
