Not to politicize this -- okay, to politicize it-- but whenever a woman meets the pope, she's supposed to wear black. That's just the way it is. White shoes between Easter and Labor Day, and all black when you meet the successor to St. Peter. Shouldn't someone have told Mrs. Clinton?

What a superbly ridiculous thing! Good for Hilary for not conforming to this misogynistic piece of ceremony.

I guess the pope doesn't want anyone outdoing his gown. I'd like to see some guy get away with trying to wear one of his getups to the prom.

Why does the pope wear a yarmulke?

Well apparently someone forgot. snapped this from the abc news website today. It's from the popes arrival at the white house. saw it like 30 seconds after first reading this thread.

And according to wikipedia (for what it's worth) George is methodist, so I'm assuming Laura is too. And the queen is defiantly not catholic. Why should they follow catholic rules.
So maybe it has to do with where they are meeting. Maybe they wear black out of respect if they are at the Vatican. I by no means am into organized religion, but i still took my hat off when in Notre Dame, Since i was on "their turf"

And one of my now all-time favorite graphics from the daily show last night. Since George went to the airport to meet the pope. Which apparently is very out of the ordinary for any president to do. First time he has ever done it. and the first time for any president at Andrews Air Force Base.

It's not a yarmulke, it's a zucchetto (also called pileolus, is a small skullcap worn by clerics of the Roman Catholic Church and within Anglicanism)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zucchetto

I dont' think the black thing is a requirement. I also thought the having the woman's head covered was a rule also, but Laura Bush and Jenna met him this morning at the airport without one...

True about Bennie's shoes. They are Prada, dincha know?

My only response is that this is America. We don't recognize titles in this country (royal or otherwise) and nobody is obliged to follow anyone else's religious customs.

For example; In England, she is Lady Haden-Guest, but here in the USA, we call her Jamie Lee Curtis.

    I like America.

Some of those guys won't be in the same room with an unveiled woman, let alone make eye contact or speak with her, so it's not really a choice they have...

Hey! Don't be dissing the Royals. They haven't murdered anyone (well apart from Princess Di) unlike the Pope.

Personally, I like the way "homosexuality" took revenge on the Catholic Church...how deliciously ironic!

You don't have to be pope to be a female impersonator.

I think McGay and Caslon would look great in Papal doilies. Guilty Gear would also look might fine.
