A dark and sinister chapter in America's history will be exposed to the full glare of publicity next week, when survivors of a largely forgotten Eugenics programme will tell their stories and seek compensation.

Under the programme people regarded as socially "un-fit" were sterilised - victims included gay men, the disabled, the mentally ill - even the poor.

32 states had laws allowing it to happen

Couldn't watch the report, but it doesn't surprise me. ALL political leaders would impose such shitty practices in their countries if they could.

It was a popular (albeit very sinister) fad of the early 20th century, reaching, of course, its nadir in Nazi Germany. It is a little known fact that Winston Churchill was an enthusiastic advocate of eugenics and wrote a paper on the subject, though it was probably something he later preferred to forget.

    ....and Canada was no exception.

"In Canada, the eugenics movement gained support early in the 20th century as prominent physicians drew a direct link between heredity and public health.[100] Eugenics was enforced by law in two Canadian provinces. In Alberta, the Sexual Sterilization Act was enacted in 1928, focusing the movement on the sterilization of mentally deficient individuals, as determined by the Alberta Eugenics Board.[101] The campaign to enforce this action was backed by groups such as the United Farm Women's Group, including key member Emily Murphy.[102]
Individuals were assessed using IQ tests like the Stanford-Binet. This posed a problem to new immigrants arriving in Canada, as many had not mastered the English language, and often their scores denoted them as having impaired intellectual functioning. As a result, many of those sterilized under the Sexual Sterilization Act were immigrants who were unfairly categorized.[103] The province of British Columbia enacted its own Sexual Sterilization Act in 1933. As in Alberta, the British Columbia Eugenics Board could recommend the sterilization of those it considered to be suffering from "mental disease or mental deficiency."[104]
The popularity of the eugenics movement peaked during the Depression when sterilization was widely seen as a way of relieving society of the financial burdens imposed by defective individuals.[105] Although the eugenics excesses of Nazi Germany diminished the popularity of the eugenics movement, the Sexual Sterilization Acts of Alberta and British Columbia were not repealed until 1972.[106]"

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidWell, look at it this way. Either sterilize people who cannot take care of themselves (poor, handicapped) or look forward to your tax dollars paying to raise their children.

Granted, I don't think people should be forced into sterilization. But if I were heterosexual, dirt poor and had no future why would I want to complicate my life by making things more impossible by bringing life into the world I cannot sustain?

People on welfare purposely have more children just so that they can receive more money from the government. Isn't that fucked up? Imagine if you found out your own mother brought you into this world so you could increase her government check. Now that shit's fucked up.

We do it to dogs and cats but when it comes to human life people call it dark and sinister. That goal is the same, to create less impact and strain on the environment.

Besides, how many people are actually fucking in the hopes to actually bring life into the world. The people that don't really want kids are the ones that have them in abundance. The people who really want to have kids are usually the ones that have such a struggle. That's awful.

The problem is, who decides the criteria for who is and who is not a useful member of society? First you start with the mentally deficient, then the socially inept, then gay people (throw in bisexuals, just to be on the safe side) and then anyone with an IQ below 120. Besides, who says that the children of poor or handicapped people are not going to turn out to be useful members of society?

Eugenics: What happens when one group of individuals sees themselves as being superior and decides who can be deemed as being fit for society.

This practice was surprisingly popular across the world in many nations such as the United Kingdom, Canada, The United States, Brazil, Australia, Sweden, China, Japan, and Germany.

    From Nazi-era Gemany
Translation: "This person suffering from hereditary defects costs the community 60,000 Reichsmark during his lifetime. Fellow German, that is your money, too."

    Instead we do the opposite...

So a dirt poor mom already living on benefits with 7 kids can go out and find a Dr willing to implant her with 8 more and pump her body full of drugs to enable the pregnancy

Reproduction should be an earned privilege and not a right. Everyone should be sterilized via vasectomy or tubal ligation before they have the opportunity to procreate. Reversal of the process should then only be allowed (at the patients' cost) when the prospective parents have proven themselves to be financially and intellectually capable of raising and supporting children.

Though the South may have nurtured white trash to its most highly devolved state, the mouth breathing inbred masses are everywhere. When I was living down in Calumet City and commuting to Chicago, I was always the only white person the bus with a full set of teeth and who didn't look like he'd narrowly escaped a meth lab explosion.

I look forward to your providing proof of your statement which will counter TANF data showing most welfare families have two children or less and only 10% of families on welfare have more than three kids.

I'f I'm not mistaken a majority of the people on welfare leave it in less then 4 years too.

While your heart is in the right place I can only see this backfiring, hard.
