Exhausting Pride Weekend But Fun

Sunday was the Stonewall Pride in Wilton Manors. My partner and I ran a vendor booth as usual to raise money & participation interest for the SMART Ride. Typically one or both of us will also be in the parade, but this year we couldn't find people to staff the booth during our absence, so we didn't participate, just watched it go by. About 40,000 people attended in our rather tiny town, but the local conservative-biased major media here wouldn't admit to over 25k.

Having to load a vehicle, do the booth set-up and the break-down ourselves, plus staff it for 10 hours without a break is no easy job at our ages. We've sworn to avoid it next year, insist someone younger handle it, while we'll just thoroughly enjoy Pride.

But still, wonderful to chat with all our friends stopping by, and we met a nice new couple just relocating in Wilton Manors from out of state, who might be joining our circle. In fact, WM info is what they wanted of us, and they sure got it this weekend, and we made sure they met lots of our friends their same ages.

Other highlights concerning the parade was Debbie Wasserman Schultz being one of the honorees. Our Member of Congress here, and also the new Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The crowds went wild when they saw her in the parade, and she addressed us afterwards from the stage, as she's done in the past. A whole gaggle of local mayors were in the parade, too, and of the course present & past mayors of Wilton Manors.

We also had about 15 parade cars that featured gay couples who've been together upwards of 30 years and more. They likewise earned a lot of crowd applause. For the naysayers who dislike Gay Pride, I'll mention we had almost nothing risque or provocative in the parade, no more than you see on prime time TV, and surprisingly few drag queens. And what got the greatest applause were the inspirational floats and people, not the bikini boys.

A well-behaved crowd, I saw & heard of no incidents, and the clean-up this morning was astonishing, you'd never know we'd had such a big event. No nudity on view, either, though as usual about a dozen totally freaky-looking people, being who knows what, strolling back and forth to get everyone's attention. And as many of you will expect, those are the ones the media will feature, making it seem like we all looked that way.

My partner & I simply were too busy for pics of our own, so my Pride images here will have to wait until friends send me some, and the gay rags publish theirs.

Here's a link for other Prides for the rest of the year, most of them in the US & Canada, but also global.

Yah know I don't think we had a single protestor? I suppose most of 'em are afraid of us! Apparently Michele Bachmann is, and merely of Lesbians. She's made a political career of it, as a recent metta8 link reminds us.

But I'm glad you had a great time, I know we always do. And I come away feeling proud, which is the whole point, often forgotten in the diversions & debates about some of the silly excesses at Pride. And just happy we know all these great people here, like a huge neighborhood block party to us. icon_biggrin.gif

In Before Pattison/TBA with some "gold card gay" rubbish. icon_razz.gif

I take it that Wilton Manors has a very mature/wealthy demographic, hence the (relative) lack of meth'ed up speedo-clad twinks prancing about on their floats?

    southbeach1500 saidYou're sooooooooooooooooooooo gay.

Thank you, I take that as a compliment, however unintentional. Not gay in the stereotypical sense I think, though I can swish it up for campy effect when the occasion may call for it.

But I am gay in the sense that I'm out and not ashamed about it, and have worked kinda hard to help others not be ashamed, either, if not be actually proud. And for that crime I'll take all the personal digs at me you like. icon_biggrin.gif

Good lord.... Any excuse for him to trot out that tired old tale of when he allegedly sent me an email inviting me to meet him for drinks.

Clearly he was off his meds that day... the entire episode was a figment of his imagination. icon_confused.gif

    But would you meet?

I'd meet with him for a beer or three, if I ever happened to be in FL for some reason.

Political differences and forum pokes aside, I'm sure he has lots of stories to tell.

Yeah, after I exposed his fantasy email to me.

And my answer then was the same as it is now.

    NO!

Southbeach Jane never really left middle school; his maturity level is far below Art's. And even mine.

Thanks, I appreciate that you remember it, and our discussing it in e-mail. But it was a post within a thread on a different topic from years ago, so the chances of finding it are slim.

I remember it quite well, and also remember that you openly invited him to meet on a topic BEFORE you sent him an email to try and arrange it.

    NO!

How could you have answered NO to me if my e-mail to you was a fantasy?

But the truth is you DIDN'T answer no, in either e-mail of post. You never replied at all.

And I was extremely offended by your bad manners, when I had publicly invited you in a couple of thread posts (and I also later said I THOUGHT I had ALSO e-mailed you, but wasn't sure, as I also stated to meninlove). To discuss our differences over drinks in South Beach on me. And meninlove & I discussed it.

It always helps to have witnesses, doesn't it?

But as often happens, southbeach is trying to hijack this otherwise happy thread about Pride. I hope the rest of us won't let him do that. icon_biggrin.gif

It is certainly a bit mature here, but not all that wealthy, compared to some big cities. Wilton Manors was a run-down white-trash suburb, of trailer parks and dilapidated homes, before the gays bought it up and renovated it. That pattern has happened many times before, where a place is in decline, and gays turn it around.

And to continue that pattern, I suppose the next step in a few years is where the straights will return, and buy everything back up, and price the gays out. But the current swing is to the gay side, lots of retired and professionals here, many of them stable couples.

And while we have some younger tourists, there isn't enough of them to make bikini-boi places profitable. You see them in Fort Lauderdale, which has the younger gay demographic, but not in Wilton Manors. And so during a gay Pride parade down Wilton Drive, you've got the wrong audience for too much boi flesh (though it's nice to see for a moment), and more interest in substantial things like gay politics and issues that really concern mature gays.

indeed, this pattern is happening in the northern part of this new orleans neigh/gay-borhood of marigny-bywater where i live. when i bought this somewhat neglected 1882 diamond-in-the-rough 5 years ago; i was a "pioneer" on this block, both in ethnic derivation and sexual preference.

in the last couple of years, i have noticed several significant renovations goin' on, often by gay couples that frequent the same gay-friendly bars and coffee shops that i do.

a true story that reflects the changing character of my gayborhood: last year, at the voting precent, a well dressed, polite, classy african-american lady was the address/driver's license checker. when my turn at the voting booth came, she looked at me, my driver's license, noted the address and gave me the biggest, most polite smile and said: "it's SO GOOD to see "you people" back living on that side of st. claude again!"

i took her comment as a great compliment.

He is all about status, and is an elitist, who spent most of his life looking down on us gays as being dirty and beneath him. Not a nice person at all.
