I've started applying to grad school and i've been wondering if i should use a separate email account. After hiding my facebook account i google searched the screen name for my email and some old twitter photos popped up.They're all me shirtless and what not. Anyone know how serious schools and businesses are about internet history checks?

It depends. I would have a separate email, just because my main one is based off of a children's show. A good rule of thumb, first letter of first name + last name.

As for the google pics, I wouldnt worry about you being shirtless. Now if your dick were showing, thats a different story.

seperate emails definately. Keep it simple and make sure it's obvious that it has something to do with you.

    Separate.
I learned because I used to have both NakedBudd@hotmail.com and MyRealName@hotmail.com. One day I was multitasking, researching, surfing porn, sending out resumés, etc. I had ALT-TABd back to Hotmail to send my resumé and a cover letter to about fifty professional recruiters and contacts, and just as I pressed SEND... I was horrified to see that NakedBudd had just sent out fifty resumés! Needless to say I did not get any responses back.

Today I still have MyRealName@hotmail.com for family and friends but now NakedBudd6@yahoo.com for "special" family and friends. (My account has been deleted a few times. Guess I get a little naughty once in a while.) Also www.facebook.com/Nbudd.

I also am a life model for art classes and a bodypaint model, so have a special Facebook page for that creative outlet too.

No first hand info but I read a Wall Street Journal article a few weeks ago that said employers are definitely looking at online sites, so even separate email address would not protect you if they could identify you from other info. Probably doesn't apply to grad schools as much, but good idea to be aware.

I google myself often and never find anything that leads to any of my online stuff. never really put my government name on the sites to be searched.

but i would have an work email with your firstname.lastname@email.com that is used just for work purposes

i think by locking your twitter that would hid the pics but im not exactly sure

It's pretty easy for an employer to find anything you do online. There are programs they can put in their computers and paid sights they can hire to investigate you without you knowing about it. I found out later there was a computer hacker that worked at the company I worked for. An employer I worked for was a SUPER Catholic. I worked there 9 years, never missed a day of work, had been trusted with every key to the building. Once he found out about what he thought was a dark (gay) side of me they started the paper trail on me and it was easy to find reason to terminate me. It was the most devastating thing that ever happened to me.

Background checks indeed can pull up almost anything you've posted on-line.

So, just be careful what you post. Something that seems harmless now could come back to haunt you. It's amazing people gave up their privacy so willingly and now post every detail of their life on line.

If you have already finished undergrad, get an alumni association email account and use that only for grad school applications or other professional endeavors.

If your profle is viewable to the public, then very easily. You can even get to public RJ pages that have been cached by google. Just google the RJ user name followed by realjock. While they wouldn't know your user name, just shows the pages that are visible to the public. But as long as you don't write much that would identify you, you're probably ok.
