It looks like a shot-for-shot remake... but with new added racial diversity!

I played Willard when my old high school put on Footloose, and you can talk all the shit you want, but based on the trailer, I think it has potential to be good. Maybe one of the few good remakes.

Haha I have an MP3 on my PC somewhere of me singing Mama Says. But sadly I was the only Willard with a heavy Northern accent, which is fine, since I guess Bomont happens to be in North Dakota.

A proper remake would have required extremely tight jeans on that actor.

Saw it last night and for some reason the movie really annoyed me. First of all, the storyline of a town outlawing DANCING worked in the original set in the 80's in a Utah town, but seemed lame and extremely far-fetched and contrived in 2011 -- even though they set this one in the deep south. Secondly, not nearly enough dancing -- it appears they outlawed it in most of the movie as well. The male lead, Kenny Wormald, playing "Ren" was just okay --- lacking the charisma that Kevin Bacon exuded in the original --- and Julianne Hough, while really attractive, just seemed unbelievable as the somewhat slutty, overly aggressive, wannabe bad girl female lead "Ariel". The saving grace of the movie was young actor Miles Teller (terrific in last year's "Rabbit Hole" --- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1886602/) in the role of best friend "Willard", who was a scene-stealer whenever he appeared. His evolution from the bumbling southern jock with two left feet to polished dancer was one of the few real joys of the film. One of the things that pushed the original to blockbuster status was the soundtrack which was chock-full of #1 hit after hit. This one doesn't have that power, in my opinion, and even the remakes of the more popular tunes from the original seemed, like the movie itself, paling in comparison to the original. On the RealJock Jocktrap Scale, this reviewer gives this one 2.5 out of 5 jockstraps, only because the film does hit a few high notes, they are just too few and far between.

Did not care about the movie at all from the previews and the lead actor doesn't do anything for me. Step Up movies had a way hotter actor. Why can't they just leave old movies alone esp when this is not even that old.

Mmmmmm. So the remake is not so hot, eh Todd? This makes me wonder........is the remake of anything ever as good as the original? Can anyone site examples of a remake that was as good, or better than the original?

I attended a film retrospective in San Francisco where Lana Turner came onstage after a showing of her films, and she answered questions and told antidotes about her career. She referred to the new Postman Always Rings Twice that had just come out as "That ROTTEN remake!"

It wasn't quite a shot for shot remake...but it wasn't far off.

I didn't care for it. I thought Kenny Wormald was good, and he's cute and all...but he wasn't so much trying to act like Ren McCormick as he was trying to act like Kevin Bacon it seemed!

Some scenes just didn't make sense. For instance, the warehouse scene: in the original, Ren's being bullied by Chuck & his goons, harassed by the police, accused of drug taking by the principal, teased by Ariel, and even accosted by his Uncle...thus his "rebellion," although it only makes sense in a movie, seemed to fit.

In this remake, Ren's being teased, but he's got a fairly decent home life, had only the one run in with the police, and really isn't getting bullied or tormented by the Principal of the school. His "explosion" seems kinda...I don't know...wierd.

And of course the climax fight scene...was just BADLY done in the remake. In the original, Chuck gets his ass handed to him, and is left out cold on the ground outside the dance. In this remake...I don't know...it was just wierd...as if it was amateur choreography!

If I was rating it, I might give it a 4 or 5/10...because Kenny Wormald was just that cute! Beyond that...nah...I didn't much care for it!

Yet somehow it's getting good reviews...I don't understand it quite frankly.

It's 73% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, yet the original was only 57%. I mean, are you kidding me? That's as bizarre as someone thinking that the scene for scene remake of Psycho was better than the Hitchcock original!

    NO

and I think all film critics agree.

like it's already been said, the story was thin back in the 80's.....

but then again, life is stranger than fiction, when you think about the guy who got suspended from school and the cheerleading squad for kissing another boy.

jpBITCHva saidAlso I hear they're doing a remake of that Aaliyah movie "Queen of the Damned".

Apparently they've toned the script way down, and it's now called "Queen of the Darned".

This is not true. However they are doing a remake of Sparkle which was a film Aaliyah was set to film in November 2001 but died that August. Jordin "Whaleface" Sparks replaces her role as Sister.
