Maybe they were jealous of the police uniforms some of the patrons wore?

Otherwise I'd have gone with nostalgia. Have some empathy. Every year, for decades, they are the bad guys while we celebrate. Just once can't they celebrate their side of ths story, too...?

Bars are raided all the time. Why is it that when it's a gay bar that we have to all complain?? Are gay bars immune from violations? I just don't understand.

It has to do with money, and the fact that they want to close it down and make that area an upscale, residential area.

They could have held off on the raid, but I am sure somebody picked that weekend.

I read it very well. icon_razz.gif

A real inspection is supposed to be sudden, first and foremost. Second of all, there were citations given, so clearly something WAS up. (I'm not going to believe so easily that NY police are that corrupt). Thirdly, come to Detroit, and I'll show you what gay leather guys do in the basement of bars, and then tell me if that's legal or not.... this place is no different. Everything else in that article is just conspiracy theories and assumptions.

Those days have passed. Definitely not a place for those not single or in a open relationship.

The OP should re-read some of the stuff on the blog. The blogger even said that the raid had nothing (if anything) to do with homophobia, it was just coincidence that it happened on this weekend.

I live in NY, in Manhattan, and this is what happens when neighborhoods are gentrified. The non-family-friendly element (in this case the leather bar) are going to be pushed out to make way for luxury condos and other things. It's slowly happening in my neighborhood too.

The strip club Scores is maybe three doors down from the eagle and I'm sure that won't last either. Condos in+new park= leather bar and strip club is out

I've been to the Eagle in Manhattan, and at times the outside roof area did get a little raunchy. I note that two of the charges were for “extension of premise,” which I'm willing to bet has to do with the roof deck. As for the noise violations, you don't hear much on the sidewalk, as I recall, but you might from that deck, if you were at the same level, say in a nearby building. Which were all pretty run down and not residential at the time I was there, but apparently there are new coops going up nearby.

And so I figure it's the developers who filed these complaints, assuming they were real, to make the Eagle move to satisfy their new occupants, who might be able to see and hear that deck, and would certainly see lots of leather boys coming and going on the sidewalks.

We have a similar situation down here: Donald Trump put up 3 enormous towers, within sight of a legal nude beach (Haulover). He then began actions to have the public law changed or invalidated, so it wouldn't be an impediment to selling his condos (I've been told they also include hotel space). Of course he knew the beach was there when he planned the buildings, Haulover's clothing optional status the result of a county ordinance in the 1990s. Not sure what interest he still has in those towers today.

My mind immediately went to R&R, which I've never been to but often heard things about, and you're right...gross!

    Still does. icon_smile.gif

And I totally agree that this action is probably from the property owners of the various condo complexes going up around the Eagle.

Because all them nice young families who will be paying $1M or more a pop on the south-facing units sure wouldn't want their young spawn to see a bunch of hairy muscle bears cavorting about in various styles of leather and/or undress.

The good old days of police raids. The things we who worked at gay clubs had to endure, for our right to get away from parties at Dorothy's. But it was all worth it, because the youth of today do not have to worrie about such things in my city.

Well NYPD has never been known for its tact. This was a bad weekend to do it but I suspect they thought it would net them a higher amount of citations, thus legitimizing their raid.

I'm not sure what this emptying of pockets is about. They would have to arrest me for me to do that.
