So the bear community of Tumblr has been up in arms about this guy's blog, calling it "body fascist" among other things. What is your take?

I actually kind of agree with most of his pictures... I mean, there's a difference in just being "bigger" than being a bear. I always thought bear meant it included hair...

Not to say some of them still wouldn't be considered bear, since "muscle bear" is a sub-genre... but I'm kind of at odds with the classification I am usually given by others.

Had to google, but yeah. Definite improvement in taste there. I 100% get being into guys like the ones in the left column, many are hot, but most of the ones on the right are like giant marshmallows with tumbleweed-esque clumps of body hair smeared indiscriminately.

Every guy on the left, does it for me, to some degree. Without exception, every guy on the right does not. Beefy and obese are two different things, but attractiveness is subjective to individual tastes. I like a little gut on this type of guy. Even the right column could pull it off with the right attitude....not for me..but for someone. I have seen that happen numerous times over the years.

I'll give credit to all of them for seemingly, being comfortable in their own bodies. On the left, they've embraced, and enhanced their body type, while on the right they've embraced, I don't give a fuck.

"Body Fascist"...probably a little extreme take on this. I'd say "not helpful" toward getting people to accept others for who they are vs what they look like.

Well, I definitely feel as though what the guy is saying is pretty darn accurate. It might be rude, but I feel as though a lot of overweight guys just say they are bears when really they should be saying they are chubs. I've always considered bears to be attractive, large, strong, hairy guys.

I guess bears get to define themselves. I tried to hang with a couple of groups of bears over the years and they were very judgmental about me working at a gym, being a vegetarian, spending quite a few evenings at the gym, etc. Most were overweight in an unhealthy way. Many didn't have hair except for a beard or goatee. God forbid you actually looked spiffy on occasion. Way too rigid for me.

I tried to stay on Bear411 but 98% would be considered obese, and you had to go through every message before you get to the next one and I was just inundated with messages from the morbidly obese.

Bigmusclebears.com is a cool site. Musclebears is a definite small subcategory of the bear community.

cold saidWell, I dunno. The site's definition of bear seems to be hairy AND a beefy body (AND 'masculine' AND good looking) - I'm not sure how true that is. Most of the time it seems like the creator is just saying fat ugly guys aren't bears - a pretty crappy reason to create a blog.

    +1

The guy's imposing his own narrow definition of what he considers a Bear... When in fact the Bear Community at large is a lot more inclusive -- all shapes, sizes & races, hairy or not -- no wonder he's getting called out.

    From Wiki:

"Bears tend to have hairy bodies and facial hair; some are heavy-set or muscular; some project an image of rugged masculinity in their grooming and appearance, though none of these are requirements or unique indicators. Some bears place importance on presenting a hypermasculine image and may shun interaction with, and even disdain, men who exhibit effeminacy. The bear concept can function as an identity, an affiliation, and an ideal to live up to, and there is ongoing debate in bear communities about what constitutes a bear, however a consensus exists that inclusion is an important part of the bear community."

    Thanks.

BTW: I put cub in my name because I thought it meant young bear, but all this terminology is confusing.

Also named wolverine after the X-man, not my body type.

So I should have been wolverineotter86 lol... Man that sounds bad

Being an overweight slob does not a bear make.
