Are any of you interested in amateur astronomy? Have you ever seen a shooting star in person? I have seen dozens and look forward to the Perseid meteor shower.

    What are stars?

Are they like the lights on the empire state building?

(I can rarely see stars here its too bright!)

I enjoy meteor showers and mark them on my calendar. Weather permitting I can hike a short distance from my home and see them easily out of range of street lights. Even my driveway isn't too bad, but there is a street light nearby.

Was just thinking last night that we're only about a month away from the Perseid shower.
(Looked it up, it's Aug. 13th this year... coinciding with full moon. icon_sad.gif ).

As a kid, back when you could still see the Milky Way from within the city, I used to sit on the roof of the house looking for meteors. One year went camping with a friend at the Peach Mountain observatory (I had a crush on him, he was a homophobe and brought his girlfriend. icon_sad.gificon_sad.gif )

Several RJers are interested in amateur astronomy. Here's an old thread from a few years back: http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/301621

I like seeing images of the Earth from space. Here's what the Earth looks like on the surface of Mars (sorry about the size):

Here are the Earth and moon from 2 million miles away, taken by the Odyssey probe:

And here's another from 114 million miles...taken by the Messenger probe about a year ago.

Too bad there is so much light pollution these days. I have grown up not being able to see the stars clearly all my life.
