What's the name of those useless non-balconies?

I'm apartment shopping and some buildings have these balcony doors that slide open to no balcony! It's just a railing flush against the side of the building.

Some buildings have both balconies and these, and I want to know if there's a word to distinguish between them.

Closest pic I could find is this:

I'm not sure there's a word in English for it. Balustrade, perhaps.

The idea is that the double doors open inward, and you can approach the opening and view outwards, without fear of falling. You get both the view and ventilation. Think of it as a big window, not a portal to go somewhere. And of course it adds a decorative visual element to the outside of the building.

    Timbales saidJuliet balcony?

I think this is correct. I've heard that term used on a few HGTV shows.

I knew the term "balustrade" from an Aimee Mann song, and had looked it up in Google Images, but the pictures didn't really look like what I've been seeing on buildings.

I wonder if they would even rent to me if I said "I'm looking for a balcony rather than a master doorway window terrace". They'd think I was an uppitybitch instead of just a skinnybitch and pass on me.

Juliet Balcony has the most relevant results. This is one like I've seen but with bars instead of a glass guard. balconies-juliet.jpg

They're useless for me. I go out on mine to read on my laptop, and to place my plants so they get decent sun. The only thing I would use a Juliet Balcony for is to kill myself out of regret for moving into an apartment with a Juliet Balcony.

I wonder if it has to do with a concept of design, but anyway it sure is useless... as the topic says.

Technically, it's just a big ass window. The "balcony" is there to prevent you from accidentally falling out. icon_lol.gif

Hey! My Grandmother's house in Mexico has two of those! But they have a view of the inner yard...

So it's not a new trend given that my grandmother's house was build back at the early 1900's.

    My children,

The Book of Wikipedia teaches us that the name 'Juliet Balcony' is named after the TITular character of Romeo & Juliet. Balcony seen with the rose smell and the whereforing.

MOTHERFUCKER UPSTAIRS STOP STOMPING ON THE FLOOR LIKE AN ASSHOLE!!

    I need to move.

The rea estate ads in DC cal them Romeo and Juliet balconies. I guess you could put a small flower box out there, otherwise juist open and address the crowds that may gather.

As someone whose family owns a construction company and grew up on housing job sites, I can tell you that those are French balconies. Juliet balconies actually protrude a little bit so you can actually stand on them, whereas in the picture you have shown, the railing is essentially flush with the wall, to be used in conjunction with French doors.

This. In my language they are always called French balconies (okay they are actually called "franske balkoner" but that wouldn't help anyone) because they are French doors + balcony hybrid. I think the point is that you can let fresh air in the entire length of a door rather than just some dumb window.

    uses for useless balcony

    smokers go there
    place for stinky shoes
a quick way to step outside and look outside with morning coffee
a great place for sex or if you have gas
a convenient way see what the unwashed masses are doing down below
a place to ponder purchasing a bigger place with bigger balconies
