Fat to Ripped?

Hey guys...this is my first time posting on this site, so please forgive me for anything that's taboo for these boards.

Anyways, last November I decided to go on a diet. I went from 245 then to 185 now. While I definitely wouldn't consider myself fat now, I wouldn't consider myself athletic.

I really, really want to get into athletic, ripped shape. I've been weight training for a few months with cardio, but I just see a bunch of weight loss and not so much getting tone abs, a big chest or anything.

Is it possible to go from fat to ripped? Or am I genetically cursed lol?

    Check out these profiles :

    http://www.realjock.com/MuscleComeBack - former MOTD MuscleComeBack, 52yo, 5'3", from 220 to 150, lost 70lbs
    http://www.realjock.com/paulflexes - former MOTD paulflexes, 40yo, 6', from 235? to 170, lost 65lbs?
    http://www.realjock.com/eagermuscle - me, 48yo, 5'11", from 260 to 182, lost 78lbs

As you can see, RJ members more than twice your age lost roughly the same amount of weight in roughly the same amount of time as you and got ripped. For you getting ripped should be even easier since you have youth on your side, just like today's 25 year old MOTD Spiritweaver, who got the best results.

Yes it is possible to go from fat to Ripped. I was fat once, but not that over weight say like umm...217 pounds. After I came back from school, I spend a lot of times out doors working with the animals in my grandmothers resident. Also doing some exercise like weight lifting and run every morning. OH MAN!! I love running...ever since i was 10 years old, I use to run about 65 miles in every direction...non stop. Those were the days and now...still a little bit out of shape, I manage to run 10 miles. Its still pretty good...but I have a long ways to go. icon_smile.gif

I lost about 30 pounds in three months just by dieting, and then I decided I would need to join a gym and start working out regularly too. I originally did full body workouts 2-3 days a week and cardio whenever I could. It worked for a little while, but recently I decided to strictly do weights. The way I see it, cardio is great if you want to improve your cardiovascular health (obviously) and for weight loss. I had pretty much lost all of the weight I wanted, now I just wanted to lose the last little bit of fat and gain muscle. I changed up my routine and now I do weights 6 days a week. I do chest and arms day 1, legs and shoulders day 2, and back and abs day 3, then repeat. I usually don't do cardio, or I'll just walk on the treadmill for 10 or so minutes. I think that this so far has helped me out far more than switching off between cardio and weights. What most people don't realize is that lifting weights is a great way of burning fat, because it takes a large amount of energy to maintain muscle mass, and fat is excellent at providing that energy. I still have some work to do, but coming from where I was I now have the visible biceps and triceps, and I'm currently working on my 4-pack :p

    Hope this helps!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post some before-and-after pics and you'll get better feedback in terms of diet/fitness suggestions.

Keep them headless/faceless and nobody will recognize you...

Great job on losing the 60 pounds! Don't let 'em back!

No such thing as genetically cursed (okay, you can't change your height and such but you can do a lot to look great).

I was 275lbs at my heaviest:

    5911368234_e425d1f84c.jpg

then i dropped down to 145lbs
    Picture133.jpg
and have slowly been building myself up

    Picture216.jpg

    Picture7.jpg

    that was at 168lbs

im now at 180lbs but i need to cut down to 170.

I never thought i would loose the weight. And then i did. Then i never thought you could see muscles on me, then you started to see it. Just keep working towards your goals, when you hit a road block re-evaluate and then push ahead.

    good luck dude!

I say stick to 180 and hit the weights as well.

As a side to keep another part of you in shape and looking good wear a good spf daily. I wear an spf 15 every day even in winter. Not that I never go in the sun. I avoid getting burnt. I love playing beach volleyball I just don't want to look like a wrinkled leather face before my time.

I understand Max. When I was fat I didn't take that many pictures either. I would actively avoid the camera icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif. So I actually believe you

All that matters now is that you have hot abs!! icon_biggrin.gif

Amazing work man, seriously talk about inspirational, you look fantastic!

And yeah, as many other posters pointed out. It's entirely possible to go from fat to ripped. I'm not quite as ripped as people define "ripped" to be, but I'm getting there.

If you'd like I can offer some tips, I'm drained from my workout at the moment, otherwise I'd just post now, but I don't want it to come out too sloppy lol.

In a gist though, I would suggest upping cardio intensity, perhaps doing HIIT cardio if you're not already, or changing your diet a bit, shock your body... check out carb cycling or keto (just know what you're doing). Some may not agree, but it definitely helped me. Just do some research and find something that works best for you.

Keep your spirits high, you'll get there if you want it and work hard to get it.
