ADDED 6/15/2012 Seeing this again after a year after the thread was bumped. The language looks so formal like trying to write a law. Reading down through the thread, some guys got annoyed thinking I was trying to force my opinion on others. Not true. The real intent was to make a positive suggestion without pointing fingers at specific people.
    ...........................................................................................................

The two members recently recognized as MOTD are both outstanding guys. They support other members, demonstrate character, and serve as positive role models. They are also both friends, so I took particular satisfaction in seeing them get this recognition. I would like their examples to keep the bar high and ensure the recognition is not diminished by future selections. Regarding MOTD threads, they can be controversial and can both help and hurt a candidate. I think that a thread that makes a case based on either these guidelines, or others, will have a more positive result. My two cents:

REASONS TO NOMINATE OR VOTE FOR A MEMBER

    1. Being a health and fitness oriented site, someone getting special recognition should have demonstrated at least some commitment to health and fitness.

    2. Being in excellent shape is a plus, because it demonstrates a commitment to fitness and serve as a motivation to others.

    3. Being older and in good shape is also a motivator that takes away excuses from other older guys who think being out of shape is inevitable. Older RJ members also serve as a motivation to younger guys knowing they do not have to fear significant physical deterioration as they get older and can always maintain a healthy lifestyle.

    4. Whatever age, showing significant improvement is also a motivator, showing the results of hard work and again taking away excuses from some who consider getting back in shape too daunting a task.

    5. Positive forum participation, always civil, is also a plus, whether in health and fitness areas or in others. Stating controversial opinions should not be disqualifying, provided such opinions are stated civilly. It is understood, however, that someone with strong opinions might dissuade others with different opinions from supporting their MOTD nomination.

    6. If someone does not show an interest in health or fitness, they should only be considered for MOTD recognition if their forum contributions or life accomplishments are exemplary in a positive way.

REASONS NOT TO NOMINATE OR VOTE FOR A MEMBER

    1. Events that do not represent some type of accomplishment or quality, such as birthdays or anniversaries of any type. We all have them, and some other type of recognition, possibly a thread, might be appropriate, but not MOTD.

    2. Cheering someone up who is depressed or otherwise dealing with challenges. There are ways of providing support, such as a thread or with personal messages.

    3. Just to prove a point, for example, showing someone of a particular age, living in a particular country or region, being of a particular race or religion, can be MOTD. The best way to make this point is for someone of a particular demographic to fit the above criteria and be recognized for their accomplishments.

REASONS NOT TO NOMINATE OR VOTE FOR A MEMBER

    4. Anyone who tries to define how others should or should not make their independent selection for MOTD.

    I agree with that...
I would have to say... I didn't even want to be MotD. Vain started the thread without me having previous knowledge so I just provided a couple lol's and banter with other members.

You know how many members are just chosen based upon good genes? It's not meant to be taken oh-so-seriously... especially by us in the forums. We dwell here for the sometimes stimulating conversation, otherwise... winning MotD doesn't REALLY have an effect on us. If we're to be representing the site, I'd understand to a point, but then it wouldn't be a popularity contest like they have it set up anyway. icon_razz.gif

There's probably no way it can be set up so it's not partially a popularity contest, but having some informal guidelines, I think, is a way to reduce the popularity aspect somewhat. Keep in mind, though, that often popularity results from achievements or forum conduct that merit recognition. It's true that good genes are an advantage, but there are also examples of hardgainers who have made significant, noteworthy progress.

MOTD is lame. Dont even pay attention to who the "man of the day" is.

it's usually some cunt that I couldn't care less about.

Guidelines are not rules, and they can be followed or ignored. If there are reasonable guidelines that many guys tend to keep in mind, the ones in the OP just my input, then the recognition will remain more meaningful, in my opinion.

I was wondering if it's common to have all of these MOTD campaigning threads here.

I didn't want to poop on any person's parade in the threads, but I do think it's kind of tasteless to tell people you deserve something. It should be driven by the initiative of others to support someone rather than a contest or an election. Otherwise it's kinda meaningless no?

MOTD has gotten pointless. I think it needs to be changed to Meal Of The Day. I nominate: nachos and beer. icon_lol.gif

Face picture essentialto stop Those faceless abs who send emails to other members requesting that you vote for them - simply wanting their ego stroked. Obviously using guys they normally wouldn't give the time of day to because they consider themselves physically superior!
