This map is based on a poll. Click for more info.

I suspect it's much higher now. That poll has a 2007 date and things have been moving fast in a (mostly) positive way in the last 4 years. Just look how many primetime shows have regular and "normal" gay characters. Far fewer just a year or two ago.

It misses a lot of data too. Like Austrialia and the Netherlands.

As well as Denmark, Iceland, New Zealand, Belgium...

To be honest I'm surprised France, Germany & Austria rated so high. I would have expected Canada to be at least equal with UK, if not equal with Sweden & Spain!

Wow, Japan's the surprising one for me. I thought they would be a lot higher than the US.

That's not Austria, but the Czech Republic there. There's no data on Austria.
And I don't think it's surprising, since I can't really say anything bad about people's tolerance here in Germany. I've never had anyone call me a fag or something.
Gay people are really popular indeed!

So how does a poll like this find only 49% "accepting" us, but on another 56% go further and APPROVE of gay marriage. Anyone else who doesn't believe in the legitimacy of all these polls popping up, raise your hands!!! icon_cool.gif

Oh ay, my bad. Too quick a glance!

I wasn't saying Germany was in any way homophobic, I never experienced intolerance or difficulty there either. But Canada, Sweden, and Spain have all passed gay marriage, for instance. Germany, UK, and Czech Republic (and Austria, for that matter) have passed civil unions or registered partnerships, but there's still the sense that that's not marriage.

wow. i'm indian, and i must say that 10% does surprise me slightly!

nonetheless, in 2009 it was made legal, and most of the people in high positions tend to make the right noises. plus, having lived there most of my life, attitudes differ massively by social class. the richer and more educated you are, the more likely you are to be okay with it.

that being said, when i came out, a friend did sit me down with genuine concern on his face and suggested i should seek medical help.

Interesting. I'd like to see a recent US map that breaks the question down by State, since the US is quite variable in this regard. Past maps I've seen naturally portray score low poll numbers in Red States, more favorable to gay-friendly in Blue.

BTW, I added the legend, to avoid referencing the site.

Everybody thinks The Netherlands is one of the most gay friendly countries in the world, and Amsterdams is almost he Gay Capitol.
But The Netherlands isn't not that tollerance. Maybe more than in other countries. But I like it in Germany a lot more than here, with the gay tollerance.

The famed Dutch tolerance is a sham.

It's a total NIMBY country. They're only tolerant of stuff happening in another town than their own. Sure they approve of gay people, as long as they don't have to be around them. Sure they approve of immigrants, as long as they don't live in their neighbourhood. Of course they support pride parades. As long as it's in the next city over.

    Fuck the Dutch.
