Meaghan Blanchard can’t believe they’re talking about her in India.

It would be an understatement to say the 22-year-old P.E.I. country singer feels bad.

Blanchard was on one of three stages full of local artists Monday at Dalvay by the Sea set to perform for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

With the eyes of the world on her, when she went to welcome the Royal couple, instead of referring to William as 'Duke’ she said ‘Dootch’.

“That did not just happen,’’ Blanchard said to the crowd immediately after the flubbed greeting.

The slip up has been reported around the world since then, with media outlets as far away as India talking about it.

“I was up all night rehearsing it and I woke up (Monday morning) and I was going over it and it went perfect during the two rehearsals,’’ Blanchard said Tuesday, a day she said was full of media interviews.

All that practice went out the window when she saw William and Kate standing right in front of her.

“I think when I saw both of them there, I guess I thought Duchess when I said Duke and I just said Dootch. I was going for a mix of the two words,’’ she said with nervous laughter.

“Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches, especially when you play music.’’

Blanchard said she knew her greeting came out wrong the second she said it.

“I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, this has to be a dream’. As much how I envisioned it happening it is definitely not how I expected it to go.’’

Easing the tension of the moment was the reaction of the Royal couple.

William immediately burst out laughing and his wife, Kate, also started to laugh, walking over to William and giving him as playful slap on the shoulder.

“Thank goodness for that. I was worried,’’ Blanchard said. “It helped ease the tension. That’s one of the more internationally embarrassing moments I’ve ever had.’’

Blanchard bounced back from the slipup to perform the self-penned ‘Waltzing with You’, a song she wrote in tribute to her grandparents. She felt the romantic ballad would be appropriate to perform for the newlyweds.

She has also received an outpouring of support from the Island’s music community.

“I’m lucky. I was on stage with all of my friends,’’ Blanchard said, referring to the likes of Stephanie Cadman and Richard Wood. “After it was over, they all came up to me and they were giving me kisses and hugs. We’re a really good community here on P.E.I.’’

The singer said she hasn’t had the chance to see how the slipup has affected traffic to her website.

“I’ve been getting calls all day.’’

If there was a silver lining in it, it would be that the hilarity of the moment brought some levity to a crowd that was soaked from heavy rain.

“Maybe it’s a good thing I broke the tension,’’ she laughed.

Ms Blanchard is a prominent young musician of Acadian descent. If she speaks French often, it is also easy to conflate duc and duchesse into "duche."

icon_biggrin.gif It was a great moment according to our ED who was there.
