I have had both all my life and currently have a fluffy Maine Coon Cat and a small, sweet Laza Apso dog, My observations have been that couples often have a dog and single guys more often have cats. I love both but have a slight preference for Cats.

I think it's more a lifestyle preference...I'm always on the go, often put in eleven hour work days, and have a long commute. I can't be home to let a dog out or give it the quality attention it needs, so I have a cat. She's my sweetheart - when I wake up in the morning, she's right there curled up on my other pillow. At the same time, she's independent enough that when I come home in the evenings, she gives me a look like she hasn't the foggiest idea why I'm intruding on her space.

Went from a single household with a dog and cat to a double now with 2 dogs and three cats (the fourth died at 18!).
I love my dog and my cat, the fucker.

    I miss my kitty icon_sad.gif

Dogs are much more fun to play with, but I find cats to be better in the maintenance department. If I had to choose one or the other... Id go with cats.

I've never had a dog as a pet, so my answer would be biased towards "cat" since I had one growing up and loved him to death.

I'm looking to make my next pet a dog, whenever it becomes feasible.

Cats and dogs (personally speaking) are both wonderful, and much easier to love unconditionally than people.

Both? I just got out of a LTR and ended up with the dog and both cats. I spend more quality time with the dog though.

Mine was a lifestyle choice. Ten years ago when I wanted a pet, I was busy at the bars, etc. So I didnt want to be committed to a dog's schedule (looks who's master now). So I got two cats...so they could keep each other company.

Dogs and cats are all good - I've had them all my life - they're a ton of company - so grateful for all we do for them. For guys like most of us - they're our kids. One thing that always works for me is to have two - so they're company for each other when I'm at work or away.

zdrew pretty well summed up what I was going to say.

I love my cat to death. He's my little buddy and I can't imagine life without him. And he's also very dog like in that he comes to greet me at the door when I walk in, lays on my lap, and sleeps next to me.

I SO want a bulldog. But I'd have to have two so they could keep each other company. Unfortunately I have a small apartment and so I wouldn't feel right about it. Dogs need a yard and plenty of space. One day...

I loved my cats, who passed away a few years ago, as much as I love my dog, who is still with me. She still misses him, too.

Well definitely a dog lover... have had a number.. grew up with a poodle as a family dog in the house... today of course its beagles.

But we have also had a cat, named after my uncle. He was great so I'm really canine and feline person, but probably prefer dogs.

I love most of god's creatures except for jellyfish and mosquitoes. icon_razz.gif

If I had to pick between cats or dogs though, I'd have to say dogs.

I vote cat. Cats are fun. Dogs are fun too but they pounce on me too often for my own liking.

Can't imagine living without dogs and cats on the farm.
Can't imagine keeping dogs or cats in the city. It seems cruel and impractical.
