Being unable to sleep despite being awake for 18+ hours

I find it so difficult to switch off after a long day at work, I'm in the UK so I've been up since 7am, it's now 3am but I don't feel the slightest bit tired! I guess since I have the week off work it's easy to stay up knowing I don't have to be up early.

Sometimes I can sleep for up to 12 hours, whereas I can also stay up for 24 hours on occasion.

I know sex is supposed to help (but that keeps me more awake lol!) and avoiding coffee does to (which I don't drink after lunch time).

What do you do to fall asleep even if you're not at all tired?

I start reading research articles. Specifically on cochlear physiology or vestibular pathologies.

I get up and do things. I'm studying painting and some of my best time painting is between 11pm to about 3am. After that I have to take a nap. It's wierd but sleeping pills/supplements etc don't seem to work, so I just accept it and take it one day at a time. Once in a while it catches up with me and I feel tired, but not usually.

I feel your pain man, What I advise you to do is PREPARE for bed. Take a shower, do all the things that you would do necessary for bed. Try to head to bed a little earlier than you usually do, so that you can get ahead start in preparing yourself. Try to do this every night so that your body is trained to become sleepy at that time. Goodluck.

I don`t.I can`t force myself to sleep if I`m not tired.I do other things that` I`ve not done and should have....
I would say if you`re not tired, leave until you are. Then you will.

    +1

My present knockout book's Diarmaid MacCullough's History of Christianity, 2 pages of that tiny writing works a charm. 864 pages, should keep me asleep for over a year.

^^ ' Now, I lay me down to sleep. I pray thy Lord, my soul to keep. Guild me through the stormy night. And wake me in the morning light! In Jesus name, I pray, Amen. ^^ icon_idea.gificon_smile.gificon_idea.gificon_smile.gificon_idea.gificon_smile.gificon_idea.gificon_smile.gificon_idea.gificon_smile.gif

I usually try this relaxation/meditation technique. I start by lying down in bed, flat on my back with my arms at my side and calming my breathing. Then I concentrate on relaxing every muscle in my body, working from my head down to my toes. I stay focused on a part of the body until I get that sort of tingly feeling there. It can be a long process, and I'm usually asleep before I get to my toes!

In general, the more anxious you get about not being able to sleep, the less likely you will - it's a vicious cycle. Whenever I can't sleep, I simply stop trying and thinking about it. I do something else, usually listen to my iPod.
