I answered a Craigslist ad in the Strictly Platonic section for a workout buddy.

The guy says that he is gay, but he is not looking for a hook-up, just a workout partner for the gym. Am I naive in thinking that is true?

What's the worst that could happen? He's not gonna jump you in the gym.

....but he might in the steam room. You know how guys roll after a hard workout.

I'm not worried about that, I could just really use someone to work out with.

Then what's the problem? He needs someone, you need someone, you're both gay, no awkwardness there - have at it!

Go for it. You're meeting in public. Keep the exchange of private info to a min until you've confirmed the guy is ok. Not sure what Syracuse CL is like, but in NYC this would be fine. There might be some subtle (and not so subtle) testing of the possible scope of after workout activity, but nothing you can't handle. Good luck!

With a little luck, you'll have made a new friend/workout buddy! Let us know how it goes.

    Your dead... just kidding, haha.

Make sure you meet in a well-lit, public place

Just go to the gym and workout together. Why speculate? A friendship begins "based on trust". You're already second-guessing him. LOL

I have a gal pal who started a "workout buddy" business this way. Through word of mouth it's now her full time gig. She's not a trainer, she just works out with people to keep them company and motivated.

It's not a bad idea at all, I would consider it myself.
