You want to measure my perineum?!

Yesterday afternoon I stopped by my doctor's office to see him about an ear ache. While I was waiting, a research scientist came in and asked if I'd participate in a research study. I'm all for supporting medical science, so I said sure. She had me start filling out some forms, mostly about my sexual orientation.

Then she told me she wanted me to disrobe so she could measure the length of my perineum. Wait, what? Apparently, she's studying to see if there's a relationship between homosexuality and length of the perineum.

I told her, "I taint ready for all that right now. Maybe next time."

I would have told her to stop being ridiculous and research something more important icon_razz.gif

A quick wiki search on perineum length shows the following:

"Measuring the anogenital distance in neonatal humans has been suggested as a noninvasive method to determine male feminisation and thereby predict neonatal and adult reproductive disorders.[5]"

    (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perineum#cite_note-4)

Seems like another research study looking for correlations between homosexuality and male feminization.

It's interesting you found that because the researcher was quite obviously transgendered. (I didn't mention this earlier because it didn't seem relevant and I'm sure someone will take offense)

Still no! I biked to my doc's office, it was about 112 degrees yesterday and humid, and I wasn't wearing my bestest drawers. icon_smile.gif

This has been tried so many times for so many different body parts and disorders. It never holds up on repeat studies. Even if they did find a correlation a larger study would quickly debunk it.

Did the doctor know this? I would decline unless he endorsed it.

As for the gender, a professional doesn't bother me. Case in point: 3 weeks ago my male urologist decided to ultra-sound my prostate, looking for tumors. He left the exam room while his technician did the procedure, who's a female.

I'm on my back on the exam table, and she tells me to drop trou and shorts to my knees, so my stuff is in full view. She applied the jelly to my pubic area, and then ran the ultra-sound pick-up unit over the area. Next she had me lay on my side, and inserted a lubed probe up my ass, to take a sonogram of the prostate internally. (Good news is no apparent tumors, but not clear if I'm cancer free, a return visit next week will determine if I still need a biopsy, which I've been avoiding)

My GP is also female, as was a urologist once, who've all given me DREs and testicular exams. So female shouldn't be the issue, or even a tranny for that matter. Rather, the question is whether this was legitimate or not.

Or was it bad science leading to bad conclusions that will work to our disadvantage? And that we should not support.

Including the hair whorl thing? I've never trusted the 2D:4D thing. Seems as hard to measure as the length of the perineum.
