Whenever I use my GOOGLECHROME web browser to watch YOUTUBE videos, the videos are blank. I hear the music, but there's no video. Instead, the video box is blank and I see my desktop background.

Is anyone else having this problem? How do I fix it?

Update your flash player ( Update Chrome (

Update your video card drivers. Easiest way to do this assuming you're using Windows 7:

    Click on the Windows button.
    RIGHT click on computer.
Select 'Manage' from the popup list. (should have a little shield logo by it)
In the right side box, click 'Device Manager'
    Click on 'Display Adapters'
Right click and select 'Update Driver Software'
In the window that pops up, select the 'search automatically for updated driver software'.

Searching on Google shows that quite a few people are having issues like this, and different things are working for different people.

The WAY easier solution? Use a different browser for watching Youtube.

I just have a black box where the video should be and no audio either. Thinking of going back to Firefox.

I had this problem a few months back that developed mysteriously.

I went to Google's help section and was able to resolve my issue by following these instructions, left by Rachelle:

Go to another site that has a LINK to a youtube video. Then RIGHT CLICK and you will access settings. Find the tab for Video Acceleration and UNCLICK IT.

Go back to Youtube and it will be repaired.

there you goooooo. Wow what a mess trying to figure this out.

This is the link where I got that tip from...

Video Not Playing - Black Screen

Here's a new link that seems to have emerged fairly recently...

Seeing a black box and unable to play Youtube videos?

You can give these a try, maybe it'll resolve your issue too.

It seems to be be a known problem that has existed for a while. The other posters are correct. The two suggestions that I found are 1) upgrade your graphics driver, or if that doesn't work 2) disable hardware acceleration. Here's a link to Google's answer. HTH.

I recently encountered the same problem described by Scruffypup. On the YouTube site, I saw a black box where the video should be, no video or audio. But in my case, the problem was ONLY when using Firefox. YT videos played fine using IE, and interestingly, embedded YT videos played in Firefox (just not directly on the YT site).

I tried a number of fixes including several mentioned above (changing the acceleration setting, updating drivers, updating Flash and Java, adjusting Java script settings in Firefox). None of these worked.

I finally found a forum on which one of the users suggested clearing the recent history in Firefox. I thought to myself 'there is no way in hell this will work.' But it did work...immediately. I simply went into Firefox tools and selected 'clear recent history' and I can now watch YT videos on the YT site in Firefox. FYI.
