James Hackemer, 29, dies in Darien Lake roller coaster accident
    4:04 AM, Jul. 9, 2011

A veteran who survived a roadside bomb in Iraq three years ago died Friday when he fell out of a roller coaster at Darien Lake Theme Park.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office reports that James Thomas Hackemer, 29, was riding the "Ride of Steel" roller coaster around 5:30 p.m. when he was ejected as it was operating. Hackemer received fatal injuries when ejected.

Hackemer lived with his parents in Gowanda.

Investigators said Hackemer — who lost both his legs and suffered a brain injury when the vehicle he was in hit a roadside bomb in 2008 — was a passenger in the front seat of the ride. The initial investigation indicated that both restraints were properly working, they said.

Officials said he fell out at a "low hill." Park safety experts and the Sheriff's Office are investigating.

The ride was shut down and the area near the ride closed off, but the rest of the park remained open Friday.

It's stories like this that make me fearful about roller coasters... hat doesn't mean I will stop riding them, though!

I have never ridden a rollercoaster in my life. And this story will likely help make it stay that way.

at the same time, though, the theme park probably shouldn't have let him ride the coaster without legs since the restraint kinda has to be secure over your legs.

i see a wrongful death suit coming

I'm sure his lack of legs contributed to the lack in stability o_O
