Guys, Is it possible to use WiFi only......NO cell provider.....for satisfactory phone service?

I'm curious if the portable WiFi hotspots( MiFi) would provide useful service, even if it involved carrying that device as well. And yes, I'm aware that that would be cumbersome and perhaps silly.....but still curious.

well, I can turn my iPhone to airplane mode then turn on the wifi and use skype as my main source of phone calls if I wanted.. but yeah the app has to be running, it just isn't really feasible to be honest.

Plus you have to have a wireless broadband connect to really make it work, the iphone say switches to 2G/Edge/GSM when it cannot find a 3G connection and so I still get great phone reception.

Without a cell provider, the only way a cell phone could be used as a phone is if it's a smart phone with an app like Skype installed. May as well skip the phone altogether and just get an iPod Touch or a tablet. To get an idea of how well that would work, do a Google search on 'skype over mifi' and read about people's experience with it.

Thanks Guys, I've got the newest Touch already so I'll try. I love FaceTime on it.

AND it seems that I will have to continue with a cell provider. But I will still DREAM.
