I'm sure not many of you know this....or have ever heard of Kate Smith...but it is said that the phrase "It ain't over til the fat lady sings" was coined for THIS lady.
Here's a little something she sang back in the 40's....for the first time EVER heard in public. Irving Berlin GAVE her the song, having actually written back in the early 1900's. She refused the song as a gift, but they mutually agreed that the royalties would be donated to the Boy Scouts of America.
Without further adieu, here is the fat lady singing God Bless America for the very first time in public!! You will see a very famous face near the end of this video.

Fat lady jokes aside- that girl could sing. There's just something you get from the sound of those old audio recordings that's lost in the digital age. Like Billie Holiday's music. They make you feel extremely happy like in Summertime or really chilled like in Strange Fruit.

Why do I think of Ricard Wagner when I see that phrase...?

There's more Anna Russell on the other Wagner operas.
