Gay Celebrity - why so few?

So after Mila Kunis agreed to go on a date with a soldier, I was thinking - if I could, what celebrity would I morally blackmail into dating me...

But, there isn't many gay celebrities to choose from. Why do you think that is? None of the gay celebrities I can think of live very public lives. If gays are becoming more and more accepted as part of society, why aren't we seeing music stars coming out or new gay actors? Is the public not ready; or is the industry assuming that gay celebrities won't find support/interest?

Pretty much more of the latter. Middle America isn't ready for gay celebrities yet. NPH was forced out of the closet, and already had his job on How I Met Your Mother secured. Actors publicists encourage them to not come out of the closet, as that might diminish their appeal. An openly gay guy is not very likely to be cast as a leading male in an action movie. Those are the facts. There are lots of closeted gay actors in Hollywood, and they're all encouraged to be set up and date female celebrities to get publicity and also squash those pesky gay rumors.

Think about it, in high school, the majority of the gay guys were in drama club. Its not that far-fetched to think Hollywood is filled with the gays. And it has been since the beginning. James Dean, Rock Hudson, etc.

Guys that are rumored to be gay are Zac Efron, Zachary Quinto, Chace Crawford, George Clooney, Hugh Jackman, etc. Colton Hayes is definitely gay but just keeps quiet about it. Even though Hollywood likes to seem like its progressive, it really is the most homophobic industry in the world in a sense. People only come out when they start becoming irrelevant and need publicity.

Maybe it will change in the future, but as of right now openly gay actors aren't seen as worth the investment/bankable. But there are definitely plenty of queers in Hollywood. You just have to read between the lines.

I'm not why there are so few. The gay community seems to be a small but really loyal base, I would think it would make sense to come out of the closet. If you are a gay or gay friendly celebrity, you are practically idolized in the gay community.

I feel like the number is bigger now than it was 10 years ago, but there are still a ton of celebs in the closet... Can't exactly blame them either. icon_confused.gif

Your point is moot. If you imagine dating someone without actually trying to then it does not matter whether or not the person is gay or straight.

And that should also not matter if you emotionally blackmail someone in hte first place. The reason he would go out with you would be the blackmail not that he is attracted to you.

I'd date Ricky Martin. There, I've said it.

Definitely Hugh Jackman too, if he is actually gay.

I think a lot of actors who are gay don't want to come out because they fear it will hurt their career, whether that is true or not is hard to judge because there aren't many high profile openly gay actors to judge whether it has harmed it. I remember reading Rupert Everett saying he thinks that being gay has reduced his career prospects, but who knows if that is due to him being gay or just being him?

    Rupert Everett is an ass.

But it doesn't seem like Wentworth Miller has gotten a lot of work since he came out. And it's not like he came out with bells and whistles on.

I think the world is too fucked for closeted celebs to come out, most of the time once they do they'll never been heard from again after the week of newspaper headlines displaying scandal and shame for all too see. Between coming out and dying Stephen Gately's career was dead in the ground.
Admittedly come Celebs survive, but they're either not the typical sex icon or too solid in the foundation to be uprooted and ditched.
I think the world is too fucked.

I reckon most of them don't admit they're gay because it'll damage their image and career.

But in saying that I'd date Matt Bomer (not officially gay but highly rumored to be)

buddy, you just answered your question. the gay community is small in numbers. therefore, if you had a chance of becoming a millionaire would you deny who you were?

Gay guys in showbusiness don't come out because it's a business. Nobody in the industry really gives a shit who you're fucking as long as you're making bank.

Don't lose any sleep fretting for 'closted gay actors'. Everybody knows. Nobody cares.

A better question is, why do gay guys give a shit?

Because famous gay guys denying their sexuality is sending the message out to the public that being gay is shameful.

Simple: Career Suicide. Thats way. People are not ready for out and proud openly gay celebrities ESPECIALLY in the film industry and in sports - two last major bastions of homophobia.

Lesbian, got all the straight guys wanking themselves off at the thought of two women at it. Doesn't work the other way around.

I don't know many straight guys who consider Ellen hot.

I don't know many straight guys who like or watch Ellen.
