Like "Ordinary People" but with a gay subplot, "Doing Time on Maple Drive" is a great underrated telefilm about a seemingly perfect but dysfunctional family. The intense coming out showdown between the hot sympathetic gay son and his icily WASP mother-from-hell may reasonate so much with some viewers that they'd shit their pants. Added bonus - a young Jim Carey roadtests his dramatic chops.

Why not peruse this lengthy list of RJ threads on the same subject?:

The War Boys (not a gay movie, but it does contain some cuties and two hot scenes). It's a wonderful movie.

    Also, check this site out:

There is a gay movie I really want to see again, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it was. I saw it on netflix ages ago.

A guy comes from Italy I believe to meet a long distance lover, lover dies, and the guy and his roommate reminisce over their lost friend and eventually things start to kindle.

It was indie, not the best made, but the guys were hot and it tugged at my heart strings. Anyone know?

Before "Brokeback Mountain," Ang Lee actually directed a lesser known, lighter gay dramedy called "The Wedding Banquet." It's quite well-made and was in fact nominated for an Oscar too.

One thing I have never quite understood is this mania for 'gay' movies. (although yes I have enjoyed some of those listed) Then you will get 'gay' film festivals, or maybe the TV will run a "season of films directed by lesbians" or whatever the case maybe, I'm sure you get the idea, but I don't give a damn if its directed by a left handed rabid baboon a good movie is a good movie. Just because its gay doesn't automatically make it good.

The Opposite Of Sex has a heart and a few laughs too

Similarly structured....Happy Endings has a gay storyline for one of the main characters

For anyone that's escaped from family...Home For The Holidays has universal appeal as well as a gay storyline via Robert Downey Jr

All three are excellent mainstream( I realize the oxymoron) dramatic comedies that happen to have some gay characters and themes; much like our own lives.
I find movies like these so much more appealing than GAY movies...although I've seen and enjoyed many of the previous mentions.

All three, again, have the power to conjure powerful emotions, while having a good time; and make you feel good in the end.

I will never forget the day I sat and watched this movie. Now that I look back, watching it was a turning point in my life.

L.I.E. was an amazing film, and quite controversial. It shows how vulnerable kids are without a good role model...even the kids that seem to have it together.

It was definitely discomforting to watch, because the predator's character is portrayed in a less than evil light. There is a lot of grey in life; not always black and white. He did take care of and love the discarded boys he took in. And they came willingly, for a better life. This one will have you talking / thinking, long into the night.

'Colonel Redl', an arthouse Czech(?) movie where the central character is a gay Intelligence officer in the Austro-Hungarian army just prior to the First World War;and he`s given an impossible job to do.He`s played superbly by Klaus Maria von Brandaur(?).The ending is as good as any I`ve seen in a movie.
