I feel like this is a huge story, and it's not really getting that much play.

I know it's WAY too early, but could you imagine one day being able to take a pill and not having to wear condoms?

Not unless that pill prevented every STD, but, yes, it would be very beneficial if it prevented HIV.

I think what he means is that HIV is the big scare for people, granted their are other risks, but there is less of a risk of getting the big one, plus I think most stds pass through ur system eventually right?

Yikes, do you realize the side effects that drugs have on a human body?
Read the small print. The side effects are real and they begin a vicious cycle of taking more drugs to counteract the initial drugs.

Remember for centuries no one ever heard of AIDS. As soon as a pill is developed, it won't be long before another disease takes its place.

Exposing yourself to large number of partners per year will never be safe.

Many of the other STDs can be caught whether you wear a condom or not.

Whoa, no, only herpes can potentially be caught when you are *wearing a condom. And that is highly unlikely unless your condom is too small for you.. And to what Chainers was saying it's true the HIV is the one that concerns most people. That and herpes, because they are viruses. The rest are bacterial infections which can be cured with antibiotics. Just saying.

And I also don't think the whole pill thing could ever work. I mean it's a nice thought, but I don't buy it.

it can, there is even a pill that if you take it for 30 days after being exposed to the virus will prevent you from getting it.

And herpes and HPV pass by skin contact, which can happen when the condom is not all the way on the base, which is possible.

Wow, that is way wrong information. You can catch herpes, syphilis and HPV even if you're wearing a condom.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidSyphilis is easy to catch as well. Even if you wear condoms. It is transmissible through oral sex. And who wears condoms for oral sex? Herpes can be transmitted through oral sex also.

Rimming a guy who has gonorrhea or chlamydia can also wind up in the rimmer's mouth and have an oral case of either of those infections.

Just wanted to be clear on the very real possible methods of transmitting STD's.

Oh, and antiviral drugs as a form of HIV prevention is not "new" news. And it's expensive. If it only reduces HIV infection by 73% do you want to be the few that fall under the 27% that wind up succumbing to HIV?

Ive also heard its a bitch on your body to take too.

This has turned into an argument about semantics. Of course you can catch STDs through means other than penetrative anal sex and even with a condom. The fact is, wearing a condom substantially lowers the risk of catching STDs through penetrative anal sex, which, incidentally, is almost always how HIV (i.e. the subject of your OP) is transmitted in gay men.

Is not lowering risk what prevention is? Of course, no method is 100 percent safe. You could abstain from sex forever, get drunk, fall in the gutter and get molested by a syphilitic hobo. My point is, a cure for HIV would not necessarily be a licence to have sex without a condom. Your OP implied it would.

lol. Thats not true buddy, and I'm not talking about oral sex. I'm talking about anal/vaginal sex. There is virtually NO risk if you are using a condom properly that fits properly.

Still wrong. And frankly, using phrases like "virtually NO risk" is really quite irresponsible. HPV is transmitted via skin-to-skin contact... if someone has a wart in their pubic area, you can catch it fairly easily.

Do you think that other parts of your bodies aren't touching when you have anal sex? If so, you're doing it wrong.

If someone dries themselves off with a towel and they have HPV.. and 5 minutes later u use that towel and it touches your ass / genitals, it can spread.

25% of people have HPV already. Most do not know it because 90% of cases do not show symptoms. Some strains cause warts, while others do not. The same strain may cause warts in one person but not another. People who show no symptoms can still spread it just as easily and the person that gets it could get warts when the person they got it from never would have.

Basically, you probably will get HPV in the next 5 years, if you do not already have it.

And that's not counting oral HPV transmission which causes throat cancer.

Yeah I was reading about HPV (more) last night. The good news is that your body, if healthy, can fight off many of the HPV infections, even the ones that are cancer causing.

I got the guardasil shot, which can help too.

So we're all gonna die of Throat Cancer, Anal Cancer or HIV. And even if we are virginal, and meet someone who we love and stick to that one person, if they have been with a few people (not a lot!) then they likely have cancer causing strains of HPV.

    Fabulous.

I'm not sure I'll ever have a sex life from here on out.........

Yea, but 90% of people wont show symptoms or get cancer. Once u get it in one place (for ex: anal) you cant get it somewhere else either. I have read that ~30% of people's bodies kill the virus down to an undetectable level after a period of several years.

as someone who has had to take antiviral therapy after potential exposure to HIV.. I can tell you, you don't wanna fucking touch that shit if you can in any way not take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That stuff screwed up my body big time, I was constantly feeling sick, I would wake up at night with the runs, I would piss a billion times a day, and I can't tell you how many times I had to shit water.

It was fucking HELL and some of you guys are thinking this is great news.. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME????????????? You have NO idea what it's like taking that shit in the dosages you need to try and prevent infection and even then it's not certain you wont contract HIV while your on it..

Gimme a freakin rubber any day of the week over bearbacking and taking that medication!!

So... so what if your immune system is capable of handling it after a few years, that's a few years your body has had to spend fighting it off. I'd prefer my immune system to spend time on more important things.

Not that it would be a joy to take, I am guessing, but the drug that they are using for prophylaxis (Truvada) has very, very few (if any) side effects for the vast majority of patients and has been a real game-changer. Of course, neither component of the drug has been around for more than ten years, so the long-term side effects may be something different.

Who the fuck gives a shit... use a rubber, the only side effect that has is protecting you from exposure to HIV
