I hate being referred to as "a gay" and I really don't like it in general "gays".

Am I just being petty or is it a logical dislike?

I'm not offended by it, it's just something that irks me. I don't know why, I'm not even bothered by fag or faggot.Anyone else?

    /can't sleep random thoughts.

I prefer to be called "a guy" because of the social association with the word gay and fem.
However, it doesn't irk me to be called "a gay." I'm more indifferent than anything.

I prefer the term "Homosexual" or "Sodomite" because Heterosexual Men and Women have adopted the word "Gay" to mean lame, loser, corny, uncool, bad etc. Furthermore the original meaning for gay means happy, thriving etc. So no one really owns the word "Gay." The meaning of words can and do change. Only time I really use "Gay" is if I'm quoting someone else.

I must say I think being called "a gay" is much better than being called "a sodomite" sheesh lol.

Ya, don't know bout sodomite bud, not all that preferable. But I notice foreigners say "a gay" a lot more. Example, my parents always say, "I think he is a gay", or "OMG, it's a gay".

Sorry to get all layman on you, but that's gay.

Now you understand why fag is accepted more. If someone said "that's fag" it would sound more like a compliment than an insult. After all, every straight man wants a fag body because fags are usually hotter. icon_wink.gif

Try saying this to certain people, or to the person calling you that:

    "Hey wetback!"

    "Wat up nigga!"

    "Shes such a cunt."

    "Hi Jew!"

    "All Asians are...."

    Get it?
Noone wants to be categorized or shrunk down to a stereotype or insult.
    NO ONE.
Treat everyone(including yourself) with respect, and it will be given to you.
And if they dont give you the respect you give, then tell them to die in a fire.

Since ones sexuality does not define one as a whole, and the fact gay has been hijacked by every Tom Dick and Harriet, as a guy who has never been with a women, and I'm secure within my sexuality, never hid, or lived a lie. The fact that I'm also secure within my gender and masculinity; guys who get hooked on being a "real man", have issues of insecurities. I'm not worried if some may feel it represents fem. But either way it does not represent one.

I was talking about my husband the other day. Had no trouble talking about my man, or our relationship. But...........One just could not use the "Gay" word, as since it's now been hijacked by every Tom, Dick, and Harriet, who may not even be gay. But then my sexuality does not defined one as a whole!

I have certainly seen 'gays' (as a collective noun) used a lot in the mainstream media (e.g "Gays Celebrate Lifting of DADT"). It is much beloved by journalists as a punchy phrase, rather like 'Britons', which only ever seems to be used in the press when referring to British persons overseas. I do not see anything particularly wrong with the phrase, other than its being indicative of lazy journalism.

I do not think 'a gay' (as in the object) is used much or is acceptable. 'Gay person', 'gay man' or 'gay woman' is much better IMHO.
