Just wondering if there's anyone out there with a partner who is in the military and that has been deployed to Afghan? How are you coping?

I've been deployed several times and it is never easy. Having someone you miss terribly is very hard as well. On the other side of the coin, I was very thankful that he was there to take care of things while I was gone.

When I deployed while I was single, it wasn't as easy because I had no one to send me things or take care of personal business while I was gone, and no one to write to help keep my spirits up.

I can't remember if I read it online or heard it on NPR or something like that, but I heard a heart-wrenching story of a gay couple who endured a military deployment split. They had been in a long-term committed relationship. One deployed for a year and hardly ever heard from his partner. He gets back home and his partner was nowhere around. He didn't know where to begin searching to find out what was going on. They were both closeted, if I remember correctly, so going to his partner's family was a bit out of the way. Anyways, he found out that his partner was in the hospital in a coma. I'll try to find that story and post it here. It was very heart-wrenching and a flood of what-ifs emotions went through my mind if I was in the same situation.

This isn't the same story, but it's similar: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106219987

WOW. All of these things have been going through my head and so far my family has been there for me.Which has been really surprising me and you know someone suggested sleeping with a piece of his favorite clothing close to me and that really has helped.

I wanted to do that with my dog (dog toys), but didn't have a way to mail it to him in Germany.
