I stopped using gay.com over 5 years ago. It's more about advertising, and less about gay community.

Same here, it's fucking annoying to use now. Don't you have to pay to get full access also?

Because it sucks. It's poorly laid out, user unfriendly, and the last time I was on a couple years ago, rather expensive for premium services.

Gay.com is full of fakes. I remember one guy had hot listed like 50 guys from all over the world with the same profile pic. On RJ, you can get your pics verified and you can video chat.

It failed to evolve, just like the magazines under its umbrella. I don't think it's dying a slow and painful death. It's already a relic.

I used to be on Gay.com and really departed any real participation after ...
    1) They changed the site, graphics, etc. It really wasn't that bad, but it didn't go over well and immediately about half their gay participants departed pretty quickly

    2) RJ: Need I say more?

There are other things. Gay.com really had guys who wanted sex and those who really wanted to chat. With Manhunt, Adam and others, those guys have a place to go that are more sexually focused.

But I agree, gay.com is definitely out of favor and has very poor participation. If it doesn't change, I would assume it will vanish eventually.

    I've never been to gay.com.
Is it like the gay MySpace of the Internet?

They do seem curiously uninterested in updating the functionality. Their last big attempt at premium services was to offer streaming TV shows and movies. (How many more lame david decocteau frat/horror formula pics can the world contain?) I've read that their creditors are now suing them, alleging fraud over the projected revenues from this.

I think the reason that a lot of people keep using it is the geographically-organized chat rooms, although those seem to be dying out too. You actually have the possibility of meeting the people you chat with, without much trouble. Yes, some people use it for hook-ups, but the guys in the local room do organize things like bowling night, video arcade night, 4th of July beach party, etc. Today, I believe they are having a picnic in pdx.

A couple of years ago, there were normally 150 - 200 people logged in to the pdx room every evening. Now, it's about 40 or 50.

It's been around since '97/'98. I remember when I first got a computer, that was the first gay website I visited. I remember when 2000 people total worldwide in the chat rooms was a busy night.

Is there a similar kind of general site for gay people oriented to talking to people in your area? (Not for sex)

RJ is about as close as it gets.

Yeah, but Realjock is centred on love of muscular men. It's not really a general gay site, and as far as I know there are no women here.

I agree it's full of fakes and the premium is overpriced and not worth it
The guys who are real and chat are yuck
I like a site where people regularly go on, not this once every three months stuff lol
Gay.com has been that and it's taken over by stupid ads/articles and fakes

Several of us wanted regional folders on RJ but there was not a whole lot of interest.

Another thing I hate about gay.com..

Messages get deleted every 2 weeks, and they don't email you to tell you when someone sent you a message! So if you don't visit the site every 2 weeks of your own initiative, you will have snubbed anyone who you were talking to.
