Personal Trainer...

    How important is it to have a personal trainer to help me along the "muscle building" process?

    I guess I should add that everytime I have tried to pack on some muscle on my own I ALWAYS fail. icon_mad.gif I either give up or believe that I can't do it on my own and I am back to square one. I am not unhealthy or overweight, I just feel that I am too slim as you may see from my photo. I am the classic "hardgainer". icon_rolleyes.gif I feel as though I don't have enough motivation to do it on my own and I need that extra kick to get to my goal.

    If any of you have had personal trainers or still have personal trainers, does it help?

    Also, for those of you who train on your own, what did you do exactly? For example: research, motivate yourself, make a planer, etc.

    Please let me know I am kind of desperate at this point haha. icon_razz.gif

    a trainers job if to

    1. Motivate you
    2. Teach you
    3. Turn working out into a habit.

    Get a trainer for 6 - 8 weeks on a regular basis. at the end of 8 weeks with some dedication and hardwork on your part you will have gotten to a point where it's more habit rather then anything else and you'll start making excuses to go to the gym rather then excuses to not go to the gym

    So sounds like a personal trainer is pretty important, especially for someone like me who is not easily motivated if I am doing things for myself.

    It depends on the person really, but lots of guys start at the gym fart around for a few years and either don't go back or get serious and start learning.

    if your serious about results and want to take a shortcut then a trainer can help with that.

    Yeah, I feel that with a personal trainer he will also be able to teach me how to do it on my own because I am sort of clueless with how to train each muscle group.

    But it IS possible to do it on my own?

    My trainer is more of a nutritional consultant via phone than a trainer. I can count the times he's been over to my house on one hand. We pretty much have the same workout routine anyway.

    As for exercises to do at home, he's taught me a few tricks; but most of what I know came from the internet...and mirrors and video to learn proper form.

    The motivation is in the mirror. I used to be pretty fat (60 lbs heavier).

    Oh wow, well congrats paulflexes for your hard work in losing 60 lbs.

    I think the reason why I am so concerned about this is because I am not sure if I can afford a personal trainer and if I can't than I want to make sure I do my research well. I don't want to try a hundred wrong ways to excercise...I want to make sure it is legit when I start.

    I'm not familiar with your gym. You could check to see what types of training programs they offer. I have a trainer, but I only meet with him occasionally to learn new routines.

    I'm self-motivated person, but I found that I would get very frustrated because I couldn't make good gains. In some cases, I was over-training. Then I'd quit for a long time because it seemed pointless to workout. A trainer can help you workout smarter so that you get the maximum benefit from your workouts. If you can't afford a trainer, you can do the research on your own, and of course ask the guys here.

    A training buddy can also help motivate you and keep you going.

    Most of them don't even really care and to me, lack a lot of sense, yah they are certified and what not and have exp but a lot of them never went to school for anything, if at all

    Not to say there are exceptions, but most trainers are like that, not to mention arrogant and pushy like an annoying car salesman

    I love my trainer. He's a former MMA fighter, in impeccable shape (in LA this week training for a DVD series he's filming later this summer) and I'm learning a ton of stuff about my body, muscles, flexibility, mobility, nutrition, supplements, etc. He throws in some boxing drills and it's a ton of fun.

    Some things I love about my trainer and why I'd recommend finding one:

    1) How much I'm learning. Like a previous poster said, you can absorb what you need and put it to practical use and be less reliant on trainers in the future. However, trainers can push you hard, keep you focused, and make you work harder when you normally might rest or otherwise quit.

    2) Variety. In 15 or so sessions...we've repeated very few things. I'm feeling things in muscles I never knew how to hit. Small things like hand position, elbow angles, minor adjustments to form in concert with body weight stuff, TRX, kettlebell, various core exercises, etc. help me achieve things I never would on my own.

    3) Not only does he help me in our sessions, he writes workouts for me to do when we're not training together. We've set a goal for December 2011 and he's writing the plan and I'm executing. Note the July 2011 pic in my profile. Just wait for the December 2011 pic. icon_cool.gif

    4) Tangible results. Physical and mental. I haven't felt this good in a long time. Worth every penny.

    5) Motivation. When he gets serious and I'm fatigued...he keeps me going. Less likely to fall victim to the plateau effect. See #2.

    6) Nutrition and Supplements. He knows his stuff...has helped me find the right combination of items, just started these last Friday.

    Bottom line, get one. There are some bad ones out there so if you find a trainer you're not exactly happy with, find another. I see someone mentioned that trainers are rip offs...and I'm sure many of them are. You have to find one you like or it's may not be worth it.

    It's been the jump start I needed to really start making strides physically. I've also noticed my solo workouts are definitely more productive.

    What a load of bullshit, you need to find a real personal trainer not some idiotic kid who was "certified" in ten minutes online!

    Thank you everyone, seems as if a personal trainer is the right way to go...however I talked with a ton of people at my gym (and countless other gyms in my area) and they are WAY more pricey than I expected icon_eek.gif (and I figured they would be expensive! ). As a young adult who is, um, poor icon_redface.gif, I just cannot simply afford it. icon_sad.gif

    But I DO thank you all for helping me and you also gave me some excellent alternatives that I should look into. I guess for now I should just ask people on realjock if I ever have a question concerning work out routines, etc. You all seem so nice on here anyway. icon_wink.gif
    Maybe in the future a personal trainer would be more affordable for me...

    I don't have advice to share, just know that you're not alone. I'm the EXACT same way. When I'm home from college my parents always get me a personal trainer to see twice a week 'cause they know I don't have the motivation to do it myself.

    'Course it doesn't help that my current personal trainer REALLY works me out. I have had to take more than one 5-minute breaks due to his routine...whew...

    If you can afford a personal trainer and have the time to really find the right one - it is a fantastic luxury and well worth it.

    If you are going to be strapped for cash as a result - what's the point?

    I am a classic poster boy for "hard-gaining ectomorphs" all over the world. I don't use a personal trainer and have been happy with the results I have found thru trial and error on my own. RJ is a fantastic resource!!!

    It's a personal journey - stay focused, remain curious, don't be overly attached to outcomes or time frames and find ways to enjoy it.

    Personal trainers, especially ones who are dedicated, can be expensive. Don't give up, you have options.
    Check the fitness/muscle magazines for workouts, advice, etc.
    Try to find a workout buddy who's at the gym around same time that you workout. It can be mutually beneficial for both of you as far spotting, motivation.

    i was working out on my own for a couple years (4-6x a week) and started really reading the magazines, etc. within the last couple months, but it wasn't until i started personal training that i started seeing real gains and definition. i was slowly getting there before the training, but there's a really noticeable difference since i started training. if you can afford it, i'd recommend it.

    A middle ground alternative: Crossfit. It's not cheap, but depending on the gym, you do go through training sessions in smaller groups and it's intense. They will also take you through their nutritional philosophy (paleo).

    I started with a bootcamp this past Monday, it's 5x/week for one hour at an ungodly hour for four weeks but I am starting to see results. I'm also not terribly out of shape so for the cost of $250+tax, it's been worth it thus far. You work at your own pace, and the fitness levels of everyone ranges the gamut. I find that guilt, pride and competition are powerful motivators ;)

    I am all for personal training. I've been working with my trainer for over a year.

    He pushes me harder than I can really push myself most days. And because of that i've seen great results. And honestly one of the best things, for me, is that my trainer has a great sense of humor and makes working out FUN. I really look forward to each session.

    I say go for it. At least do a few sessions and go from there.
