Just a thought. Probably means nothing to a lot of dudes... but when you're spotting another dude it's kind of like you're watching out for them "you've got your buddy's back." Thoughts? Opinions? Trolls?

It's like when you and your straight gym bud walk into the bathroom at the same time and there's only one urinal open, so you both share it at the same time and your streams cross.

Someone apparently needs to learn the rules:

Spotting at the gym = way to break the ice.
Could lead to friendship, or a date. icon_biggrin.gif

Not if your gym is 100% straight, and you like all of 'em. icon_sad.gif

I always think of that scene in Jeffrey.

If you haven't seen it, head to around the 3:40 mark.

LOL. Well, I've made a handful of straight gym buddies. No expectations or sexual tension. Just give each other motivation (and competition) to lift heavier.

This, great way to break the ice. Whether you go to a gay gym or straight gym, there are bound to be gay guys there.

That's when you swear to them that you're straight, get them to your place, and do them on the DL. icon_twisted.gif

I thought this was going to be about when you're at the gym and on your period, and you get spotting on your white jean shorts and on the bench.

And then Gia comes over and crucifies you in front of everyone and you run out crying.

I keep getting asked to spot elbows for heavy dumbell presses so lately I've groped more arms than paulflexes. Getting asked to spot squats must be like hitting lotto.

A great excuse to check out somebodys package while youre benchpressing.
Or an alibi to back your ass up to his crotch while squatting. icon_lol.gif

I've trained with MenschPress who looks a lot like Steven Weber but I never pulled those moves! But before anyone thinks I'm a complete washout as a homosexual before I moved to the 'burbs I used to train at that gym, hang at that store and I saw the original stageplay of "Jeffrey" at the Minetta Lane Theatre.

I refuse to spot other dudes. Typically, they will overload the machine and then expect me to to the bulk of the work. In addition, my workout sessions are time restricted, so I don't have many minutes to devote to helping others with their workouts. In general, my workout sessions are MY TIME. If you need a spot, bring a workout partner. Dont ask me.

I would love a workout buddy, straight or gay I don't give a crap, it just helps to get your reps and numbers up and motivate you. I'm usually in the zone and not so talkative so I haven't met any gym buddies yet. Sigh.

I do feel like a lot of the guys at my gym are like gym husbands though because they always workout with the same guy and are pretty faithful. I suppose it is a form of male bonding.

He DOES look like MenschPress - kinda eerie!!!!!

I have never worked out in a gym in my life - I am not sure if these threads encourage me to give it a shot or continue to stay home LOL!!!!!

reminds me of the guy who spotted me last week

it was rather surreal, he just approached me and asked if i needed someone to spot me when i was on the bench press. then he gave me some tips to improve my workout which was really nice.

i haven't seen him since, though. kinda sad really.

Need a spot? ASK FOR IT. Don't be afraid to ask someone if they need a spot. Like many others have said, it's a wonderful ice breaker.

I've found my cold, angry, gym image has been shattered by people asking me for spots and realizing i'm actually a really nice guy. I was also on bench yesterday when this guy came out of nowhere and asked if I needed a spot, and he was great at it. .

Also, if you spot, get into it. Cheer the person on, give him an ego lift when they finish. I find it really helps people a lot with the mental game that comes with weightlifting.

I also tend to not really spot someone until I see them really struggle, I will look like I'm spotting them but am in fact letting them do all the work, if they have any serious trouble I will use my strength to help them out. When they finish I let them know I didn't help at all, again, it just helps with that mental game.
