The word "pride" has multiple definitions. Here are some from Merriam-Webster that make calling Gay Pride Gay Pride absolutely appropriate:

    a reasonable or justifiable self-respect

delight or elation arising from some act, possession, or relationship

    ostentatious display

a showy or impressive group (a pride of dancers)

Those of you who say people should only be proud of something they've achieved would be correct if Pride was celebrated in order to suggest that gays were, to use another definition of the word, the best in a group or class. It is not. People celebrate it in ways that reflect various combinations of the above meanings.

Attendance, let alone enjoyment, is not mandatory. But telling people who do attend and enjoy Pride to calculate their every move with how the media might portray it in mind is telling them to undermine the meanings of Pride I cited above. The why-do-they-call-Gay-Pride-Gay-Pride people are the ones misusing the word.

On another note, it would also be incorrect to call a marching group of bears a pride. That's lions.

I always considered it to be the opposite of "shame". I never call it Gay Pride, because it's about everyone letting their pervitude flop out.

In french, it is split into 2 words. Fier = this kind of pride, Orgeuil = arrogant pride. It's probably less controversial for the french.

Do you provide well-marked route maps to your bed?

This is mostly a problem (the term "Gay Pride") for homophobes and/or gay men who refer to themselves as "straight-acting/straight-appearing". The latter are really offended with any campy behavior. That's a separate issue from whether such campy behavior gets a bit over the top.

I like slimmuscly's '...a reasonable self-respect..." or "...delight or elation..."

It's a celebration of the fact we can express ourselves.

It is my understanding that a well marked route to Paul's bed is now included with all copies of The Gay Agenda.

yourname2000 saidIt's a party we host for the benefit of the entire community. I see it no different than Caribbean Days or Italian Days or any other community event. It is an honour to "show our colours" and have our party so well received by the broader community and it may have some positive spinoffs, but folks who think our rights came directly from pride parades are delusional. It was court cases that got us our rights here in Canada, and it will be court cases that do it in the US.

Ugh, I know where this is going to go, and that I shouldnt do it, but Im gonna do it anyways...

I dont think our rights were a direct result from Pride, but I think it helped.

Your right, our equality is coming from the court cases, and I think Pride helps influence those judges to rule for our side.

Really noname2000? What segment of the entire community was the following gem of yours meant to honour?

    "And I'm fucking done.

I usually get called the bleeding heart environmentalist liberal, so I'm blown away that I'm arguing libertarian shit to a bunch of fascist homos. Some of you are as bad as any republican I've ever met, just in the opposite direction.

If this is the unity that pride brings, I hope you like it. 'Cos right now, if a right wing breeder told me he was gonna blow ya all up, I coming to think that would probably be the best thing for the rest of us gays in the world who just want to live together with hetros instead of being in everyone's face for our own self-absorbed reasons.

Go fuck yourselves. I want nothing to do with you militant asswipes"

And this was one of the cleaner ones noneck2000. YOU are the only one who has said anything about rights coming directly from a parade.
