    Massive gravitational pull.

Actually, did ya know that the gravity is still the same, it doesn't change but the size of the object causing the gravity changes.

ie, if our sun were to spontaneously turn into a black hole the amount of gravity wouldn't change at all, it would remain constant, but the size of area producing gravity would change, so, we, as in earthlingers would not experience gravitational changes (although it might become a little dark) HOWEVER, you would be able to get closer to the source of gravity.

I just explained that terribly, but I thought it was fascinating and didn't know that before I learnt it ;)

Light that can't escape... and knowing that there is a black hole at the center of the Milky Way (or about any galaxy)... kind of gives you the creeps... lurking and no escape....icon_mad.gif

first thing: a black guy's arse hole
second thing: a void zone that draws in all proximal matter and energy (i'm totally not a physicist)

    Two things:

    1) Event Horizon

    2) The 70's Disney movie called The Black Hole.

    HndsmKansan Light that can't escape..

I was under the impression that within certain conditions energy can be lost (evaporated) from inside the black hole's event horizon due to quantum energy fluctuations associated with the Uncertainty Principle .

Death of a star. It's implosion causes a black hole with gravitational pull so great that it even bends light.
Also the star in our solar system is not big enough to be turned into a black hole. It can turn into a red giant though when there is no Hydrogen left to fuse into Helium.

The hole of a black guy did come to mind first though.. icon_redface.gif

    http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2001/ast23oct_1/

Scientists for the first time have seen energy being extracted from a black hole..."Never before have we seen energy extracted from a black hole," said co-author Christopher Reynolds of the University of Maryland, College Park. "We always see energy going in, not out." ...

Thanks for the references. I wasn't aware of this aspect of black hole dynamics.

What I was referring to is at the opposite end of the spatial scale where quantum effects beccome more important. If I remember correctly, for a while when the CERN particle accelerator was being designed and constructed, there was some concern that it might generate very small black holes that could grow and ultimately destroy earth. However, estimates of the magnitude of the 'evaporation' mechanism indicated that if any black holes were formed, these tiny black holes would quickly 'die' from this loss mechanism.
