Woke up this morning and see a bat sleeping in the breezeway outside my door (still there). Here he/she is stretching and scratching.

Our farm is pretty near to you, and we have bats flying around all over the place. Friends with a place a little further out have bats nesting all over their home - they're trying to figure out what to do about the little critters, which are cute, and great for insect control, but leave a bit too much crapola behind for comfort.

At first I thought it was a large moth, until I zoomed in with the camera and took a still picture. OMG, it's a bat! I wonder if it can detect the infrared autofocus. It's so hot out, going to be 115 heat index today. I may put out water, but it appears to be hanging in there (pun intended). icon_wink.gif

    That's so adorable.

He's really going to town on his grooming.

You have to name him. Might I recommend Bruce? Though Christian, Adam, George, or Michael would work too.

I like Adam! Let me see how Adam is doing.........

Still sleeping away. I wonder what time he'll start his shift. Total darkness or near darkness.

I had one up in the rafters of my front porch for a couple of years. He ate a lot of insects...but has moved on now. I still feel the void. icon_cry.gif

Hahaha " Please don't be rabid and please don't come towards me." Awesome! Usually use that on a different kind of animal icon_rolleyes.gif... but I guess its applicable here too.

Pretty interesting Vic. I see them occasionally at dusk looking for food,
sometimes flying by so quick you don't realize what they are.

I grew up in Carlsbad New Mexico 10 miles from the Carlsbad Caverns and I would see hundreds of bats nightly during the summer. I even had one fly in to my windshield once. Creepy little animals.

I grew up in Georgia and have a country house in rural South Carolina. We love our bats! They come out at night and they eat all of the mosquitos and some of the bees and stuff. They will live in the rafters or you can build them a "bat house", sort of like a bird house but with the opening at the bottom.

The BAD thing about bats is if they get into the attic they become huge nasty, smelly pests and you have to hire a guy to get them out. They poop everywhere and it is toxic.

But, Adam is cute. (I like the name Bruce for Bruce Wayne.... batman, but Adam is a cute name, too.)

I just got back from visiting friends in Austin, TX (Rocking fucking town, btw, amazing city and everybody should check it out. One of my favorite places in the U.S.)
This is home to the largest urban bat population in the U.S., in residence from about May to October under the Congress Street bridge, and they emerge every night and head east to consume ten times their weight in insects before returning to their nests. They migrate to Mexico in the Winter months.
It's an amazing sight, as they snake across the twilight sky and create quite spectacle.

Cute icon_smile.gif Where I'm from, bats can usually get into your house and other buildings. It was always funny to watch everyone freak out when they saw a bat icon_lol.gif

9:57 p.m.: Our boy has left! Have a good night Adam. Plenty of bugs out there. Remember to pace yourself, and rest now and then. Find a nice tree tonight. We'll miss you! icon_wink.gif
