The National Day of Silence is on April 25! Are you participating? It is mostly a school based movement, but are others participating outside of academia? Does anyone think it’s effective? (I do)

As for me, I've asked a lot of friends (mostly all straight) to participate but few have shown interest-- at least I make them aware of it and make them choose to ignore it-- that's better in my eyes than not having to make a choice in the first place.

Sounds like a productive thing to do most certainly.
However it may difficult when one works.

I didn't click on your link, but a Day of Silence sounds great. Unfortunately (though fortunate that I have a job), I have to teach five classes tomorrow.

Maybe in the spirit of the day, I'll try something more Zen-like than yelling to keep order.

But silence is good (in my opinion) and a silent mind--even better.

Maybe no posts tomorrow. Just reading.

Thanks for the posts- all of my professors have been supportive, which is relieving. One of them even said they would mention something at the beginning of class.

I think it can be done in the business world too, the day is fluid for each person to adapt how "silent" they want to be; the point is to raise awareness, which may or may not include hampering someone's day by being silent... perhaps symbolic of how hampering (understatement) it can be to be harassed for sexual orientation.

I'm not participating as the concept of remaining silent so as to highlight injustices does not make sense to me; I see current silence and "hush hush" as being parts of the problem. I fail to see how shutting up denounces bullying or other forms of social and personal assault.

I don't know whether the Day of Silence is an effective tool toward improving the social conditions for LGBTQ (and other) youth. I am uncertain of how its effectiveness can be measured (interview surveys? official or unofficial statistics on bullying?).
