Ok, so this is a total n00b question, but I have always wondered. What exactly is the point and or utility of a pump? I've had many before from working out, and personally I am not sure what to make of it. It makes me feel odd cause my range of motion goes down and gets kinda clunky, but it's not unenjoyable either.

I've noticed a lot of guys are always looking for a good pump as they call it, and will even take supplements for it. Is there any use for this? I mean, all it does form my perspective, is make you a little bigger/swollen for a short while. Are there long term effects? Does it help you grow faster? What utility does it have (if any).

    Thanks! icon_smile.gif

A pump is just extra blood pumping through your muscle fibers, making them appear larger.
And yes - IF you're bulking - you must get a pump to make progress.

When you work out, blood rushes to your muscles and delivers oxygen and nutrients. So a pump is a good thing. But the other aspect of achieving a pump is that it's a good indicator that you're properly stimulating your muscles. Like say you're doing bench presses. After you finish your set, if you don't feel your pecs and part of your triceps pumped, then you were doing the exercise wrong.

This is the main concept that a lot noobs don't get. They tend to go through the motions of pushing weights around, without really knowing/understanding what the purpose of the exercise is.

I like getting a good pump on, because I've got really low body fat and my vascularity and shred really stand out. This makes my polo shirts fit better as well.

A pump is when blood rushes in the muscles, doing things like drop sets really helps get the pump in. Also, a good pump helps you grow as well

I thought it was usually referred to as "the" pump. A pump (working like you described from OP) could be anything. icon_lol.gif
