    Anyone see this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43856767/ns/world_news-world_environment/?GT1=43001

357 dead sharks found on boat inside Galapagos park
Largest case of its kind in park history; 30 fishermen face charges

I just got back from visiting my sister in the Galapagos and was lucky enough to go diving with these awesome creatures. Really saddens me to see this and I know there are many more boats like this that didn't get caught.

Has anyone ever had shark fin soup? Is it really that good? What do you think the punishment should be for these fishermen?

Dangled in those shark cage thingys not knowing the sharks can't get to them to scare them shitless, then have them do community service work with a local marine foundation in addition to jail time.

Let me go on record to say I do NOT like sharks, the big ones. All the new age muble jumble about how beautiful they are etc etc does not change the fact I am scared of them. And they are STUPID, driven by instict, it makes them dangerous.

However, mass killings like this is just WRONG! Human race is the cancer of the eco system. We grow without check and bounds, over hunting whatever resource we can get our hands on.

The only way to really stop killing is to educate those bloody Chinese and change their thinking, maybe in a generation or two things will get better. But by then maybe there won't be any species left to protect.

Basically the Chinese mentality is like the 19th centry europe. And they have a gigantic population getting rich enough to afford whatever they want/ Where ever there is commercial lead poaching/ hunting of endangered species, you know the CHinese have their finger in there somewhere.

Be worried, be very worried unless things change soon.

I don't know if shark fin soup really is that good. Why do people have to eat everything they see? Sheesh, I can't imagine it tastes sooo amazingly wonderful.

Yeah they should totally be punished harshly...big fines and jail time. And education programs.

Sad case, though would not wish harm to the fishermen. They are just trying to provide for themselves.

Honestly the same can be said about us North Americans, the Europeans, etc.

Yup. We might not eat them, but surely we exterminate many more species. Free enterprise in all its glory.

And yes, I'm ashamed to say that shark fin soup is THAT good (I haven't had real shark fin soup for about 15 years now). icon_redface.gif The replacement products just don't taste the same.

Note I used Dislike, not Hate. 2 words, similar but not the same meanings.

Hate is emotional, Dislike is rational.

Every time I go out surfing there is the danger of getting mauled by one - some big bull sharks were caught just 2 days ago near the river mouth I surf.

    I dislike them very much.

I saw a shark attack when I was 14. As far as I'm concerned, these men are heroes. Although, they hunted the wrong species - it's the whites, tigers, and bulls that we should be fishing. They're the only ones I hate. Recently a 6 year old girl was attacked by a shark on Ocracoke, NC in only a foot of water. I say, kill them all.

No animal should ever be killed...I hate that people get attacked and sometimes killed by them but sharks are just exhibiting natural behavior. After all WE are the one's who go into THEIR habitats....

If you think sharks are nothing more than stupid, and run on instinct, you don't know much about them do you. Ever see gay men at a club following fresh young meat in a pack, running on the instinct of their dicks. The amount of gay and bi men who have given another a death sentance because they put the instinct of their dick, before the well being of another. Humans are the worst and most dangerous animals of them all, capable of every kind of evil; shame we cannot rid the earth of all humans.

Even in my country Oz we protect things like sea Cucumbers, Giant Clams and such, and they thieve here, because we protect them. Yet we are surrounded by Asian countries who ignore our laws, and i legally take from our waters. We need to burn more fishing boats.

They also thrive there as you happen to be a naturally safe area, with tons of reefs and coves to go into. Burning fishing boats will just put bad shit into the water

I think if you illegally fish shark and stuff, you should get the same treatment that they show to the sharks. a belly slit for a belly slit.

Could we at least try? PLEASE let's start with this annoying ass from Austraila? Then we could stop. icon_biggrin.gif

As for this thread topic? No excuse for this at all. Burn the boats, and let the killers swim with "their prey." icon_wink.gif

ya know, there's never been a documented account of an orca attempting to eat a human even when we get in the water with them. i wonder why they get it right and the sharks get it wrong?

also, interesting to note that a lot of your visceral reactions to this article, like how we should toss the fishermen in with the sharks or cut them open like they do to the sharks is exactly the same visceral reaction that i feel about the sharks! oh sure, you'll defend your point with some airtight, borderline heretical rationalization; "we're in THEIR territory, we should expect it," "we're smart enough to know better," "we're just doing to them what they did to the sharks." your visceral reaction is exactly the same as how i feel. so you're no different from me.

Issues. You need to own them cupcake, and then start to deal with them. You have just sighted to have one murded. Now if a Conservative said such a thing here, the screaming of wet cats would be deferning.

Now go own your issues, and then deal with them. My death will be of no help to you; stick your head in the Sand if you don;t like it, or press ignore his post, you do not have too look, so stop bitching about your choices.icon_rolleyes.gif

OH PS But...........Trish. you cut out the best part too, to make it look like something it is not; tut, tut, tut; shame on you.

Now make my day and press Ignore His post, it's a choice RJ has given you, use it, or stop your bitching cupcake.

Sharks mistake humans for seals or other wounded animals that are considered their prey...everyone knows that (should?)....but if I'm not mistaken didn't an Orca kill it's trainer (not by eating her but by pulling her ponytail and drowning her which in my opinion SEEMED to have been done on purpose) at SeaWorld a year or so ago? That was in captivity so imagine what an untrained Orca in the wild would do to someone who was meddling where they shouldn't be. They might not eat you but you know just as well as I do they could kill if they wanted to. Just because everyone fell in love with Shamu being this sweet Orca doesn't mean that we shouldn't consider them just as dangerous as sharks...after all, Orcas prey on Great White Sharks. I read a news article a few years ago about an Orca mistaking a boy for it's prey and nipped at it but the boy got away. So humans getting killed by whales can also happen and if we keep messing with their natural food cycle it will....

**I said "seemed" because the whale might have thought she was playing and it may not have been done on purpose.

Either way, killing ANY animal should be grounds for severe punishment in my opinion...no matter what kind of animal it is.
