An official in Ghana has called for the immediate arrest of all gays and lesbians in the nation’s Western Region. The order came from Paul Evans Aidoo, the Western Regional Minister, and is drawing widespread support from other politicians as well as Ghana’s conservative religious leaders.

Speaking to radio station Joy FM on July 20, Aidoo disputed a recent estimation that Ghana’s gay and lesbian population totals 8,000. “I don’t believe it; nobody believes it. We do not see them,” he said, adding, “All efforts are being made to get rid of these people in society.”

These efforts include recruiting law enforcement agencies, such as Ghana’s Bureau of National Investigations, to track down and arrest suspected gays and lesbians. Aidoo has also asked ordinary citizens to report anyone they believe might be involved in a same-sex relationship.

Once arrested, Joy News reports, gay and lesbian Ghanaians “will be hauled before court to test the strength of the law, which frowns upon homosexuality.”

Currently, Ghana’s constitution does not extend human rights or legal protections based on sexual orientation. In fact, its criminal code contains a clause prohibiting “unnatural carnal knowledge.” This ambiguous phrase reflects a pervasive homophobia cultivated within Ghana’s religious communities. According to Joy News, the Western Region has recently played host to a series of anti-gay protests staged by Muslims and Christians. Protesters derided same-sex relationships as “ungodly” and “demonic.”

“This detestable and abominable act, if passed into law in Ghana, will bring the wrath of God upon the nation and the consequences will be unbearable,” said the Christian Counsel of Ghana’s Rev. Fred Deegbe, speaking at a July 18 press conference and quoted in The Examiner.

This proposed “round up” of gays and lesbians in Ghana follows a disturbing trend of LGBT persecution in Africa. In Uganda, a now-infamous Anti-Homosexuality Bill called for the execution of repeat offenders. The “Kill the Gays” Bill, as it is commonly known, is still being supported by Uganda’s Minister of Parliament.

    WOW. JUST FUCKING WOW.

What's more "ungodly" and demonic than killing your human beings? Fucking religious, hypocritical bastards. Regardless of these assholes are being extreme and irrational, their insanity is still fueled by religion.

I was just talking to someone the other night about far-behind-times cultures, like in Afghanistan and some African nations. I stated that people are alive but not living. This is truly primitive and regressive humanity.

Yes, but these issues are promulgated by this very line of thinking. If you're going to solve these big issues, you have to fight it at the root causes.

Or you know...we could just stop raping the entire continent for the profit of "civilized" nations. Africa's been getting the short end of the stick ever since Europeans fist landed, and now people are pissed shit like this happens.

Its so fucking hilarious that they always talk about the bad guys here, but never mention the countless pro-LGBT activists in Africa fighting against this strain of far-right Christian and Islamic extremism. icon_lol.gif

Just like US Republicans, after they gained control of the US House of Representatives, who immediately proposed social legislation that targeted gays & women. Not addressing the financial crisis the previous Republican Administration had left behind, on which they had campaigned, but going for the gay jugular.

And now, after wasting a year doing nothing about the economy, but focused on social issues like gay & women's rights, Republicans are prepared to sink the US economy. In hopes they can hang it on the Democrats, and regain full power once again.

And it may work. They've got FOX News working for them 24/7, and the fanatical Teabaggers who wouldn't understand the nuances of a political issue if it bit them in the ass (as may shortly happen).

There are many people in the US, some of them right here on RJ, who would like to see what is happening in Africa come to these shores. Because make no mistake -- a number of RJers here are no gays, but placed here to disrupt and undermine us, as I strongly suspect. And I think we all know who they are, yes? They really are too obvious.

Posting nothing but extreme right-wing political stuff here several times a day, and nothing else, on a gay health & fitness site.

Write to your Congressmen telling them you want all aid cut off to African countries that violate basic human rights. It only take a few minutes.

Perhaps. But my conclusions and predictions are usually proven true. I was trained in law enforcement to look for patterns of behavior & motivation. I would rather suggest that those who see the evidence right beneath their noses and can't recognize it are the ones who are "losing it." A rather personally abusive and insulting phrase to say to me, BTW.

"Benign belief" will lose a battle as quickly as the strength of opposing forces, as well you should know. I suspect you may need a reality check, and reassess the field. But you're what -- an NCO? Not trained in advanced tactics, a technical expert in the several specialized skills you perform. I'm sure quite competently, for which Americans should be proud & grateful, and for which I salute you. But it does not surprise me that you cannot fathom what I'm saying, really beyond your pay grade.

This statement is absurd. I've lived in southeastern Ghana and people are more open-minded and welcoming than most places in the US. One of the reasons Africa is in such distress is because of the Europeans. Berlin 1885. Go and live in Africa for awhile and you will finally see.

Let's cut aid to the people that need it most because of a few lunatics?

And it's ok for crazy extreme leftists to post all over this site? Figures you take this chance to bash the right, even though this is not about the USA

I suggest you do some research into Africa and what has, is, and hasn't been done to the country by outside forces.
