I know for many decades now that there have been people claiming that air bags kill more people than they safe. But I can tell you from first-hand experience that is not the case. On Friday evening I was making a left hand turn when a lady with her baby and dog in the car ran a red light and the whole front end and drivers side of the car were completely smashed. The air bags went off to help protect me from the impact. I was told that if the air bags did not go off, I would have died. Thankfully the baby, dog and woman are fine. The woman sustained minor injuries, as did I.

People say that kind of stuff because they can remember once or twice on the news or about the friend of a friend of a friend where they heard of an airbag killing someone. The reason it makes the news or is discussed and remembered is because it is an unusual occurrence. You don't hear about the all the times airbags save lives because that happens everyday.

I was in a similar accident when I was in college...the police said if it wasn't for the air bag and seatbelt, I would have gone through the windshield. The worst I sustained was a chemical burn on my wrist from the airbag.

Wait, I thought Jesus saved your life?

Which was it? The proper functioning of a mechanical system that was designed by humans, or a long-dead prophet who miraculously reached down from heaven and made big puffy things spew forth from your steering wheel? icon_confused.gif

I have been in 2 major car accidents spaced about to years apart...I was stopped getting ready to pull into my driveway when I was hit by an older gentlemen...he hadn't seen I was stopped so he hit me going 40 miles an hour...I taken to the hospital with head and back..leg injuries...The second accident I was sitting at a stop light when a 88 year old man mistakenly used his gas petal for the brake...I was driving an Acura...they had to cut me out...again to the hospital...I just feel charmed I wasn't seriously hurt... cjs I'm glad you fared well man.BUD

When air bags were just introduced, I was opposed to them. The reason given for air bags was to provide protection for people who wouldn't wear seat belts; no other reason was given. I figured that because I ALWAYS wore a seat belt, I shouldn't be forced to pay for air bags just because some people would not wear seat belts. And, if that were the only reason for air bags, I would be right.

Since then, it has been determined that even when passengers wear seat belts, air bags provide a considerable degree of extra protection. Since that is the case, I now support air bags. However, my motorcycles are not equipped with air bags.

I guess Im a bit of a cynic, but I always say if cars wouldnt be taking so many lives in the first place, we wouldnt need air bags to save us.
