Something I've been wondering about for a while is why there is such importance and pressure to have a picture (and to a lesser degree a filled out profile) at this site compared to every other forum I've been to.

Some sites have almost no pictures of the actual person, and in the past, forums had no pictures at all.

Just to pre-empt some responses: Everyone would agree that having a filled out profile is helpful in getting to know someone. But at this site in particular, it seems like no pics, no text and a person isn't welcome. Why is that sentiment popular here compared to other sites.

If people are offering advice on the forums, misc posters judge the value in what they say by their appearance.

You're kidding me, right? So what kind of appearance would be linked to advice of good/high quality?

For fitness advice, I won't listen to someone who's out of shape...or has no pics to prove their ideas are effective.

    Ah ok. That's definitely understandable.

I'm a regular at two other sites where most members don't have pics. One of those sites doesn't even have the capability for members to have profile pics, yet we still get to know each other and have thoughtful, and often humorous, conversations.

I can understand not wanting to take fitness advice from someone you can't see, but there's a good amount of nastiness directed at members without pics here in the "All Things Gay" forum....and there isn't much fitness advice being given here. That's not to say I don't understand why some will attack an anon when the anon starts making judgement calls towards members with pics. It's just that at other sites one can't make the "Well, you don't have any pics!" retort.

The sans-pics people are just fine as long as they show a propensity for participating in amicable, constructive, " thoughtful, and often humorous, conversations."

When they elect not to do so, their willifully invisible presence magnifies the collective skepticism in The Age of the Troll.

People whose very first few posts are intended to incite flame wars, guys with one pic (of a forearm or a toe or something random) commenting critically on the "guys above them," and people begging/insisting you open your private pics when they have none to speak of (Reaper, anyone?) all get the same scale of heat.

Calling them out doesn't stop them from posting or sending messages anyway, so I wouldn't cry terribly much for them.

well, the first half of the name of the site is called "Real"... so that should be some clue. There's plenty of places for anonymity elsewhere on the Web.

    hmmm

Good responses. I'm impressed. And since I created the topic, I will be taking all of the credit for it. Well done, me!

P.S. I can't stand avatars with cartoony characters and immature kids running wild either. I wish kids were restricted to some island with no Internet until they turn 16.

Because I want to know who I'm talking to. I'm not really into the chat room thing.
