Been a hard core fan for 8 seasons, have been a conspiracist for 5, which is part of the reason why I love the show (almost more than the dancing).
I find Season 8's dances to be, for the most part, appallingly generic and forgettable. The only one's that I've really rewatched have been the Justine Giles contemporary with Clarice & Jess, Iveta and Pasha's number, Nick & Iveta's Quickstep, Sonya's Top 20 group number, Kelley Abbey's Top 12 group number, and most of Jess's other numbers.
This season we have seen the continued watering down of ballroom into lift-heavy contemporary numbers (with maybe 6 counts of closed hold, the rest is posing and lifts) as well as the continued bastardization of hip hop into the unrecognizable lyrical hip hop. e.g. Marko and Mel's hip hop was really more of a jazz piece.
My favorite (superior technically and in performance) was Jess, who was short-shrifted with bottom of the barrel choreography, partners that were ill suited for him, an unfair arrogant and liftfail edit, and pushing Tadd and Marko (who are inferior in technique and performance quality). Guy smashed every duet he was in, hit it out of the park in the group numbers, and made even the crappiest choreography look good.
The blatant favoritism of Nigel, Mary's complete and utter disregard for any real ballroom critique, and the lack of Melanie getting anything but contemporary/jazz (because that Viennese waltz was contemporary and her hip hop was a jazz) is ruining the season and show for me.
