The unemployment situation across America is bad, no doubt. But for African-Americans in some cities, this is not the great recession. It’s the Great Depression.

Take Charlotte, N.C., for example. It is a jewel of the “new South.” The largest financial center outside of New York City, it's the showcase for next year’s Democratic National Convention. It was a land of hope and opportunity for many blacks with a four-year college degree or higher.

According to an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, in Charlotte, N.C., the unemployment rate for African-Americans is 19.2 percent. If you add in people who have given up looking for jobs, that number exceeds 20 percent, which, according to economists Algernon Austin and William Darity, has effectively mired blacks in a depression.

Yup. And since African Americans are disproportionately represented in public jobs, the cutting of state jobs, pensions, benefits, is further impoverishing this community.

Well this is what White Republicans & Teabaggers want. The decline started during the Bush Administration, so don't blame it on Obama & Democrats. So that your point is what?

Nice try.... but not at all reflective of reality.

The reality is, this is just another victory for Obama and the Democrats, as they've enslaved a very large segment of our population in government dependence.

It's exactly reflective of reality. Your Obama schizo-affective disorder is all that prevents you from seeing it. Government jobs are down under Obama, and the vast majority of cuts occurring now are at the state and municipal level due to right wing asshats.

Earning a living by being employed the government is not "enslavement" and it's a really despicable analogy to use when speaking about African Americans.

I'm not talking about government employees. That number is tiny compared to the numbers receiving government assistance.

And as for the term "enslavement" - I've used it here in the past when describing the Democrat's plan to vastly increase the number of people dependent on government. It's a color-blind term as I've used it in the past on here. But of course, racists always like to play the race card.... icon_rolleyes.gif

So Republicans policies that you support destroyed the economy and somehow Democrats are responsible for the record unemployment levels in the AA community?

Do you read and write in English? icon_lol.gif

And I'm not going to get into the race thing with you again. Most people who are racist don't realize they are. It's like being insane.

In a way I wish you wouldn't engage this southbeach1500 creature. He's clearly here on a mission, and you realize of course you cannot reason with him.

For a while I thought it would be wise to refute such right-wing propaganda, lest others here be misled, which is the purpose of southbeach and a few others here.

But then I thought -- just ignore them. A response only bumps the thread higher. (And I'm sorry I did this here, but to speak to your and others)

Just ignore them. Their posts will sink to the bottom, and no one will read them. A great many guys here already know who they are, and avoid their posts. I do recommend it.

There are many fiscally conservative guys on RJ who don't post but send several of us messages appreciating our input to provide a balance to the leftist viewpoints.

I think more likely is that nobody who's sane [or not in it for the Lulz] bothers to read the political section of RJ anymore.

My comment is true, but from some of the other comments I see, there is certainly truth to what you observe.

Then maybe you're a racist and you don't know it!

Maybe I'm a witch too and I don't know it!

    Very true.

And based on the amount of email I get here, it's far more than a few.

I think the group of leftists who continually post very partisan messages are in a bubble. They take comfort in their group, thinking they are opposed by only a few. However, if they were aware of the number of people who, via messages, disagree with them, and were also aware of some of the specific things RJ members say about them, they would be shocked.
