After civilization collapses...

I often wondered what skills I posses that would be marketable in the world if civilization as we know it was to collapse.

Being good with computers would do me no good in a post tech world, and I am not a good physical labor person so no farming or hunting. Pretty much I'd likely starve quickly if I didnt have a plan.

So I decided I'll be a moonshiner, and run a western style tavern. Because no matter whats happening in the world people always want to get drunk, and I'll have plenty of a valuable commodity to trade for food so i wont have to farm for myself.

Anyone else ever give this kinda thing a thought?

    I could kill zombies.
    I can cook.
I learned survival skills in Boy Scouts. Yes, survival skills and how to make out with other boys.

LOL If it were zombies I'd have to scrap the tavern idea since being stationary would be a liability. I think I'd end up being something like a horse riding zombie killing cowboy with a tarnished past and very detached, with a bit a mystery to me. And a really cool scar, cuz dudes dig scars hahahaha

If you're serious, there are lots of survival websites out there. Instructions on how to hunt, fish, farm, etc.

I can grow food, I can cook, I can make soap, and I can make paper. Guessing that a zombie apocalypse is slightly less likely than an worldwide economic meltdown, I will be ready to do my part to keep some fragment of civilization alive.

No,but thinking on it,being fit and athletic would help.
Security-can look after myself as ex-police.
Food-have grown my own food in past,so can again(always assuming it isn`t as bad as in 'The Road'!) I take roadkill as well,so can butcher animals for meat-and not squeamish about hacking down any roaming zombies!
Introvert-so would be happy with my own company, etc.
Come to think of it,maybe I`d be happier if civilization did take a fall!

Remember to get to the zombies before they emaciate completely - otherwise there won't be any fat on em to make soap with ;)

I just want to host a post-apocalypse mailing list (so I can collect the addresses of people who have shelters I can raid later ;) )

If we're talking about after a nuclear war, we'd be in big trouble because of massive radiation. You wouldn't be able to fish because the marine life would be dead or poisonous. Also the soil may be infertile so we couldn't grow anything. There's no such thing as zombies... only druggies but they'd be dead because theyd be too high to try to survive. I guess my skill would be a scavenger to grab all the canned goods from the deserted stores before the radiation gets to them. I'm having too much fun.

I don't really have any survival skills so if one of you that do let me tag along, I can make a very nice scrapbook of our post apocalypse adventures.

I thought a lot about this after I was disabled and came to the conclusion that I would be not only superfluous to a post apocalyptic society's needs but a liability.

Even outside hunter/gatherer/warrior castes I am less efficient, so there would be little place for me in such a world, where survival of the fittest is the only rule that counts

Read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy for one take on what "civilization" might look like after a mega-event (whether natural or man-made).

Careful with that... they can be accused of evil magic at any time anything bad happens and be put to death!

Only useful if you remember to look at them before hand lol.

I have a small collection of books on similar subjects, including preserving food, something often forgotten. Also read a lot of history, including my grandparents farm life, pre-electricity. I also have several books on simple/home remedies and local plants.
I can cook and sort of know how to butcher and skin animals. I do leather work (and understand the concepts of tanning, even if I have never done it) including armour. I also know the basics of brewing and distilling. I know a little bit of basic chemistry, including material sources and the recipe for gun powder.
I have 2 swords (real ones, not the cheap crap from the mall) and rattan wasters (sticks, but I can dent steel or break bones with them). I suck as an archer but know the basics (and where to get gear after the end lol).
I have a background in communications and a lot of anthro/sociology study.

I am set for being a community leader lol.

Nope. Never thought about this at all. Not a bit.

I've thought about this from both a personal and a gay perspective. On a personal level, there'd be no need for financial planners and I have no special skills. If people value education, I could always teach. I've also thought of getting a big dog for personal protection.

On a macro gay level, I think tolerance outside of immediate families would disappear. We tend to be in service or artistic professions (law, accounting, decorator, etc.), so we wouldn't have survival value, but would continue to use resources such as food and shelter. History shows us that people get meaner when they feel their lives are threatened.

Kudos to the gay doctors and engineers who posted. People will always need to build and have their illnesses ameliorated.
