The hypocrisy of the Republicans and their looney Tea Party compatriots is very evident when you see who has contributed to the current debt levels of the USA:

    Republicans

    Ronald Reagan $1.0 trillion
    George H Bush $1.5 trillion
    George W Bush a whopping $6.1 trillion

    Democrats

    Bill Clinton $1.5 trillion
    Obama $2.4 trillion

Added to this, the almost total deregulation of the financial systems and the wastage of tax cuts to the wealthy under the Republicans which led to the Global Financial Crisis has made Obama's job incredibly difficult.

If I were the Obama Administration - I would have the above figures writ large on billboards all over the USA.

The rest of the world is starting to breathe again...however...the Tea Party still wait in the lower house...they have shown with their ridiculous chant...'hold the line...hold the line'...that they are unfit to govern

...and the source of the above figures? The highly respected Australian Financial Review with the figures provided by the USA Treasury...

    The House originates spending bills.

Now, for the years cited, how many of those years were the Democrats controlling Congress?

The Republicans policies are what led to the deficits and debt. Cutting taxes while raising spending.

You got this right and we need to keep saying it, because this truth is being lost to the TBagger/ GOP talking points, in part because of the spineless dems who starting up top with Obama, compromise away their bargaining power even while the public is squarely behind them.

...of course I understand how laws are written in the USA - in Australia we have exactly the same situation.

The decision to go to war (often on a lie and a sense of finishing Papa's unfinished business) is what caused the huge deficits -

...and Christian73 is spot on - the Republicans cut taxes while increasing spending - you just cannot do both...

As I said, I would have the above figures writ large right across the USA on huge billboards...you cannot suppress the truth - but the Republicans sure will try to re-write history....

SB .... you need to do a little homework Bud

How much has the Bush Tax Cuts added to our debt and Medicare Part D
Both of which were not paid for and were simply added to our debt
How much was our sojourn into Iraq something that STILL makes us PAY and Pay and Pay

Those were republican and republican only ideas ..... and shoved through by the last JOKE of an administration
So stop with the Bullsh*t that the democrats had anything to do with this crisis
This is republican owned and perpetuated
and it's time to lay the blame where it belongs

The decision to go to war was overwhelmingly supported by Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

Furthermore, Nancy Pelosi in the 2006 campaign promised that if the voters gave control of the House to Democrats, she would stop the funding for the wars. The voters did, and she didn't.

The largest deficit during the Bush years was less than $500 billion. Deficits during Obama are $1.5+ trillion and will remain over $1 trillion for the rest of the decade if the Obama policies are allowed to continue.

But yeah... it's mostly the Republican's fault.

Incorrect. The Democrats in Congress didn't support the wars "overwhelmingly" because they were lied to by the Bush administration. Having been told the truth, they would probably not have voted for it. In fact, several have been quoted as saying such.

The Bush administration and Republicans like yourself constantly said that if Pelosi led a defunding of the wars, they would be committing "treason" and "giving aid and comfort to the terrorists."

And since Bush never put the wars on the books, your assessment of his deficits is lacking in basic facts. icon_rolleyes.gif

Thank for posting the simple facts in a way that's easily understood.
    And you're absolutely right.
These facts need to be explained to a lot of folks who've been completely misled - AKA lied to - by the pro-right-wing propaganda machine.

We even see the deliberate spreading of misinformation by Southbeach and our other RJ right-winger friends right here on the blog threads.
