Rudolf Brazda, believed to be the last surviving person who was sent to a Nazi concentration camp because of his homosexuality, has died, a German gay rights group said Thursday. He was 98.

The Berlin branch of the Lesbian and Gay Association, or LSVD, said that Brazda died on Wednesday. It didn't give details of the location or cause of death.

Brazda was sent to the Nazis' Buchenwald concentration camp in August 1942 and held there until its liberation by U.S. forces in 1945.

Nazi Germany declared homosexuality an aberration that threatened the German race, and convicted some 50,000 homosexuals as criminals. An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 gay men were deported to concentration camps, where few survived.

When a memorial to the Nazis' gay victims was unveiled in Berlin in 2008, the LSVD said the last ex-prisoner that it knew of had died three years earlier. But the group said it was then contacted by Brazda, who visited the memorial at its invitation and became an honorary member.

Brazda was born in 1913. He grew up in the eastern German town of Meuselwitz and repeatedly ran into trouble with Nazi authorities over his homosexuality before being sent to Buchenwald.

Brazda lived in the Alsace region of eastern France after World War II. Earlier this year, he was named a knight in the country's Legion of Honor.

Very sad. Now that pink triangle side of the story from the war is truly history- no person left to give a first hand account of the horror.

Sad - though perhaps more depressing is that gays have continued to be persecuted by states in our backyard like Cuba - heck, I wonder how many people who popularly wear Che Guevera t-shirts on their profile pics realize he summarily executed gays and sent them to concentration camps.

    More here on Rudolf Brazda:

I heard the Nazi's killed 13 million people, including the mentally disturbed, the handicapped, the sick, the gay, the slavic, and the semitic....

I find it kind of enraging to hear people talk forever about "6 million jews" and blatantly disregard the unregarded murder of the other 7 million! The humanity! For god's sake

Well, unfortunately there's no accounting for intelligence in the "establishment."

    Not the "semitic" but Jews.

I'm not sure who speaks "forever" about only 6 million Jews but not of the other 6-7 million victims.

Note that the article I cited in the OP came from Haaretz, one of the leading papers in Israel - the Jewish state.

    For other examples, see also:

One difference, however, stands out. There was a "final solution" only for Jews.
Many homosexuals, Roma/Sinti and others died due to the horrible conditions at camps.
But they did not undergo "selection" upon arrival, with most heading for the gas "showers" and immediate extermination.

Indeed, the anti-Jewish propaganda was so intense and effective that even as the war was being lost there was an effort to exterminate as many Jews as possible while there was still time. For example, the "transports" of Jews on railroad lines to death camps took precedence over the movement of troops and materiel to the front lines.

Had the nazis won the war or held out longer, I'm sure other groups (e.g. Slavs) would have followed the fate of the Jews. Thankfully the Third Reich didn't last more than 12 years let alone 1000 years.

Thank you both for the OP AND the intelligent response to the individuals who complained about "those" who talk "forever" about the six million Jews who were murdered.
