So going into my senior year, my friends predict that my popularity will skyrocket due to the fact I will be openly gay. I understand where they are coming from when they say that. I believe that I was not always the crowd fave. because I was fighting myself throughout middle and the beginning of high school. The fact that I will now be the real me, many feel as if I will be noticed in school. Have you guys seen this happen to someone? Did this happen to you when you came out?icon_cool.gif

Dude...it's your Senior year...stay friends with who your friends are...and in a year when you go to college, you'll fall into a group of friends that will accept you for who you are right off the bat...i wouldn't really worry about the popularity bullshit in high school...it is almost over for you.

No. Coming out and being known as gay does not make you popular. You make you popular or whatever you want to call it. If your sexuality makes you popular then it's solely as a trophy and it will lose it's appeal the moment you graduate. If anything it will look like you are looking for attention but it doesn't really matter because it will be short-lived either way.

Depends on your school but I think you'll gain some popularity not all good, but not all bad. Just be you!

My cool quotient skyrocketed with faculty and students when I came out in grad school... of course, that was grad school, not high school.

Well I wouldn't say it made me more popular, but I came out to a few friends right before senior year. I was actually elected Homecoming King, but I don't think it was due to my sexuality....Just be yourself and if people question your sexuality just tell them the truth. That's what I do. Coming out doesn't have to be a big deal. I casually brought it up in conversation to a bunch of people.

I found people seemed to appreciate that I was able to open up and be honest, and I gained some friends because of it.

Yes, it did. But for very different reasons.

I don't think it was a matter of popularity in the terms that we associate it with. When I came out, I think people were appreciative, understanding and very supportive--three things that spread very rapidly. My friends, teachers and even my ex-girlfriend was incredibly supportive. Nothing really changed except that I could be myself and not have to hide who I was. I think the fact that coming out, being yourself and having support became popular--not the person behind it.

For str8 adults, having a gay friend makes you cool. Not sure what happens on that cusp between highschool and adult. Depends on where you want your life to go I guess.
