So Kotaku has an interesting article today about minorities in video games (the video goes a lot deeper than just race). This also got me thinking about the new Ultimate universe spiderman (and the reaction that a lot of people had http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/08/02/fear-of-a-black-spider-man/), which made me think of the AWESOME response one of the Bioware devs had on their forums http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/304/index/6661775&lf=8 (I suggest EVERYONE read this)

I mean aside from that though, as a gay black nerd growing up, I got tired of saving girls or being the "all american" hero type. But I wonder what some of the opinions of my fellow RJ'ers

This was also a standout comment on Kotaku for me

IUHoosNot to be racist, but im almost instantly turned off to a game if im forced to play as a race other than white. When i play a game, i want to BE that character. Im the kind of guy where, when given the choice of customization, pick the 'sam worthington' options. If im playing a big burly black guy, than a ton of immersion is lost for me. Its even worse if its a third-person game.

Im all for ethnic, racial, and gender choices when it comes to customization, but if im forced to play as a character that i cant relate to, then that game probably wont be purchased by me.

It stuck out because I've spent my entire geek life relating to people who don't look, sound, act, or even have the same ideas as me when it comes to media.

This is why I am not into the current titles of games that are out right now. The fact that they want to stereotype people in the worst way possible for a profit is a real turn off to me and it's so prominent in western culture. I am a huge RPG fan and I play them because I get a broader spectrum of characters that I can relate to. I am more than a stubbly face war vet, a thug from LA and a emo-teen from Massachusetts. Bottom line: it's all a profit and the greatest example I can think of is the Silent Hill series right now.

Of the 3 western releases I've seen so far of the series Origins and Homecoming are the absolute worst. Granted you want something true to life, but the companies just basically added in what the audience wanted to see more of because of games like God of War, Gears of War and Left for Dead. Enemies are added simply to scare you and are not apart of the initial story of the game whatsoever. And perhaps, like the video stated, this is due to the fact that the writing in the gaming industry is just not really there and they can't afford it. The demographic here in the US is geared towards what we want to see more of and what sells (boobed out Nurses and a diesel killing machine like Pyramid Head). And apparently it's sex, bigotry, racism, homophobia and misogyny. Also, I feel real bad that Pyramid Head was in Homecoming and Origins because he could do a lot better for himself icon_sad.gif Also, neither of those games were scary.

Great video though even tho I was shaking my head at some of the comments made. Especially about people not caring what the character looks like which is completely bullshit and we have no idea who those e-mails were from. But I will stick to my Final Fantasies, Shin Megami's and other eastern games.
