I'm not sure if you've received one of these yet, or if these have been around for a while and I didn't notice it before, but I've started receiving e-mails like the one below, informing me that someone in my city viewed my profile.

For those of us in big cities, I imagine it'll get annoying/old fast (I've already turned it off), though I imagine it's a better feature for those in smaller towns.

What's interesting to me is that Realjock seems finally ready, in its own way, to start moving into the "location" game. Mobile phones and apps like Grindr and Scruff have really made location the #1 metric that matches you with others, so do you think Realjock is starting to feel the pressure?

Do you guys think Realjock is ready to evolve and embrace some of these new changes? Or do you think this is just a "Me too" move aimed at getting people back to the site? I'm milidly curious as someone who recently helped start/build a web-based product, since these sorts of changes usually have some goal attached to them.

I've been on this site since early 2007, and maybe I'm biased since I work in the web industry, but I've always thought RJ is one of the slowest moving sites when it comes to adding features / making changes. For example, the base layout of RJ is nearly exactly the same as when I signed up for it. (Though at least it's not as ugly and annoying as BigMuscle.com)

(HOW TO TURN IT OFF: go to http://www.realjock.com/preferences, uncheck "Someone near me views my profile", and click Save Changes.)

Of course like any other site this runs automatically with little human involvement, but this one sometimes seems like there might be even less human activity behind the scenes making decisions, adding new features, etc. Last week we did not even get the newsletter- about the only thing that let's us know there is a human involved somewhere. I think this is a site where it is the members that make it enjoyable. You could probably find a site that has better features, runs smoother, and is more up to date, but you wouldn't find the same group of such good guys.

Somebody viewed me!? Holy shit sound the church bells!

I've always considered the "who's viewed you" features on various sites...nice. Nice but inconsequential. Definitely not meriting an email notification. Hell I've turned off all email notifications from RJ from the day I signed up.

Does it have to be from your actual city and not just "someone near me"? I just checked who viewed me to see if there was anyone close. I live in the Royal Oak, MI and someone viewed me from Ferndale, MI and I received no notice. There is zero miles between the cities- we border each other.

Yes, I've gotten a couple of these...and I'm NOT pleased about it.
First of all, I know every guy from my area who is on RJ...in one form or another. Secondly...what is so friggin' important that they are from MY area and not the Duke of Windsor's ??? Who gives a rats behind???

I'm guessing RJ is too geographically challenged to detect anything beyond an exact match between cities. To determine that two cities are near each other would require some sort of geocoding capability, such as attaching latitude and longitude to each city in its database, and then calculating the distance between cities whenever a "view" occurs. Still, because RJ members don't divulge their addresses, any attempt at geocoding is not going to be very precise.
